Hi everyone,

Just wondering if there is anything that you can take for pain. My husband is at 17% filtration, so we are trying to keep it there and not add any additional issues for his kidney. I keep saying Tylenol is okay, but not sure. We've asked his docs, but nobody can give us a straight answer. He is awaiting a hip replacement, and the pain is overwhelming for him right now. Thanks for you help.

Hi Carol & welcome to the forum. Sorry to read about all the difficulties your husband has going on. Have you questioned his kidney specialist about this, if not, I would. Even if you have to call the nurse & speak with her she can talk to the dr. Here is my suggestion. Something I have learned over the years is drs go to school to learn about conditions & diseases. This is where having a good pharmacist can come in handy. They have studied medications & have more knowledge. Drs spend little time learning about drugs of any kind. They may spend a few minutes with a drug rep that comes by their office or have a designated staff member that handles the drug rep. I would also question the pharmacist about the Tylenol usage such as frequency & dosage.

I take Tylenol and tramadol(Ultram). FDA made it Schedule One a couple of years ago. So here in Massachusetts, I get it by keeping an opioid contract. 28 days at time. 13 new prescription a year. Yearly urine drug test.

I am cautioned to keep Tylenol at no more than 3,000 mg not 4,000. That is a Tylenol thing unrelated to tramadol. 3K mg/day is a liver consideration. My liver is fine.

I've had a patent renal graft from a deceased donor since January 2012. Dialysis from 2006 to 2012.

UNOS sees all use of cannabis as abuse. Medical and recreational vendors are operating in the state. I do not partake.
