How much do you really have to stick to no breads, starches and sugar?

I started off super strict (not even any potatoes, rice etc.), but my naturopath suggested that it was more important that I could actually follow the diet long-term than that I stick to it 100%. So I've added in a breakfast cereal 3x a week- it's a flax, and other seed mix, similar to oatmeal. It looks like bird seed and takes 30 min to cook (the longer the carbs take to cook, the better they are). So far, so good. It especially helps with...well, let's just say it has lots of fibre.
But I avoid everything else- including all other forms of carbs. And if I have any yeast problems, I'm dropping the cereal completely.
