Confused about Flagyl

Dear All

I have recently been prescribed Flagyl 1200mg per day divided into 3 doses. I have been reading up a lot about this drug, but am slightly confused because I have been taking it on its own, yet everyone else I have read about seems to take it in combination with other abx. My understanding is that Flagyl attacks the cyst form, but you also require another abx to then kill the spirochete form at the same time. Is this correct or will Flagyl kill both forms together without the need of combination abx?

I am soooo confused!!!

Any advice would be much appreciated,

Hi LH,

I was prescribed several different kinds of abx sequentially, and then Flagyl by itself as the last course before I went off them altogether. I did not take the Flagyl with anything else.

It was like my doctor scared all the bacteria into cyst form and then killed them with the Flagyl. I think this is a common approach for patients who have had the infection a long time. Is that the case with you?

You should be able to ask you doc what his/her thinking is on this. Every doctor seems to have different approaches and they seem to tailor the treatment to the individual.

In any case, be assured that Flagyl is mighty powerful and will no doubt do you good.

Thank you so much for the reply! I have been so worried about this drug. I have had Lyme for quite a few years which is now chronic and I have a lot of neurological symptoms.

I have read that Flagyl can be very effective for some people, but the thing that confuses me is that I was only diagnosed with Lyme and Bartonella in late November, so I have only been on treatment for just over 3 months. The first 3 months I was on doxy, and my symptoms increased and I had lots of herxing. I had my follow up with my LLMD last week, and was prescribed Flagyl and told to come off the doxy.

As you say, it seems that most folks are given Flagyl towards the end of antibiotic treatment, so I am a bit concerned as to why I have been prescribed it so early on in treatment. I have also been reading about how powerful Flagyl is, and how it can cause major herx reactions in some patients, especially those which present with neuro symptoms. This is also very worrying as my herx reactions from Doxy were pretty bad.

How are you doing now you are off the antibiotics? thanks again for the reply!

Hi LH,

I have heard of some people being prescribed Flagyl and then they go on to something else and then back onto Flagyl. Also some doctors have their patients "pulse" Flagyl; on for a period of time and then off for another period. There are a lot of ways to use it.

Probably won't do any good to say this, but do try to stop worrying. It really doesn't help your health. Doesn't really help anything!

As it happens after I had Flagyl and then came off it last May, I must have been bitten again shortly thereafter. By July I wasn't feeling well at all and by the end of August I was back at the Lyme doctor and back on Rifampin. Switched up to Clindamycin in December.

It's been hard work but I am back up to 90% of my health. There are just some neurological symptoms left. Now most of my aches and pains are due to my body getting used to being physically active again. Rebuilding muscles is ouchy!

Thank you for the reassurance! I have only been prescribed 6 weeks worth of flagyl, so perhaps my LLMD is planning something else for me once the 6 weeks is up! I have been on it for 1 week so far and have not had as much herxing as I had whilst on doxy, so shall see how it goes.

Im so sorry to hear you were bitten again, thats awful, but pleased to hear you are getting better. I must admit I am terrified of being bitten again, so much so I am not going near my garden this year! I used to be a massive gardening fan, usually spent nearly all spring and summer out there, but not anymore, the thought terrifies me. My husband went out there last year with a sheet, and draped it over the grass and wooded areas, when he came back the sheet was covered with ticks! extremely scary!

I hope your improvements continue getting better, keep up the good work!

I was prescribed flagyl by a naturopath to take care of one of the parasites that they found in the stool test.
so it was for either diaomebia fragialis or hookworm.

I went to the tick borne specialist and she told me to hold off on the flagyl because it would slamm my liver.

I have Hep C. This was before she even got the blood wrk back but she knew just from hearing my story and examining me that I had all the lyme plus confections.

So I would say bump up the coffee enemas to keep pulling everything else out AND there is a really good chance that you have these parasites that the ticks carry so you will be knocking them out too.

Isn't flagyl given for yeast infections?

I don't understand why every lyme doctor doesn't do the intensive stool test to get a better look at just how off our systems are in terms of digestion and assimilation and the PARASITES.

The metemetrex 2100 series was expensive $395 but it came up with so much info I want to even do it again over a year later.

My stomach never blows up anymore and all those belly and gallbladder pains are gone!!
