My child was bit by a positive deer tick; what would YOU do??

Hi all,

Its been a while since I have written because life is just so busy.

I am nearing a year and a half in my Lyme journey and now my child has been bitten.

The tick was attached a very short time--maximum of a half hour.

I sent the tick in for analysis and it was positive for the Lyme bacterium.

I have an appt for the pediatrician and I know they will brush me off.

I have been reading up on how lyme is transmitted from tick to host and it seems the current understanding is that the bacterium become active once the tick begins to feed, transforms, and enters the saliva. The exact timing isn't known but I know I got it from a tick only attached 12 to 16 hours.

What would you do? get him treated just in case? is it AT ALL possible to get it in a half hour???

I'm soooo glad to hear that your life is busy with something other than these infections! Congrats!
Although I'm very sorry to hear about your little one. Good thing you had the tick tested! I would say to get your child into treatment. I would, otherwise I would worry over each little flu or cold!

www.drjoneskids.com/ would be a good place for you to get information, as he treats children. Read the section about titled "Treat the bite!" A short course of abx and it'll take care of the infections if there were any passed to your child. No one thinks a thing of putting a child on abx if there is a hint of bronchitis or sinus infection - the same should hold true for tick bites.

Thanks traveler. He is 2 1/2 wks post bite with no symptoms. The pedi is willing to treat only for 14 days and only to appease me. I'm wondering if that's be long enough to truly rid him of it if he had it?

Hi Worried,
On Dr Jones site they quote Joseph Burrascano's recommendation of 28 days with oral abx for children who show no symptoms. That pretty much says it. If your son were to have had a bull's eye rash, it would raise it to be 6 weeks of oral abx.

I would push for the full 28 days. Take in a copy of Joseph Burrascano's "Advance Topics in Lyme Disease" (which can be found in the 'New to Lyme?' thread) with you. See if the doc will go to Dr Jones' website and read his recommendations. Do whatever you have to do to get your son 28 days of abx!!!

We all know what happens when the treatment isn't long enough - relapses and no child needs to go through that.

Homeopathic Ledum, 2 pellets melted under the tongue 2x/day for 1 week may help prevent Lyme also. Homeopathy must be taken 20 minutes apart from anything else put into the mouth.
