Hey I have a cousin who's husband was recently bitten by a Lyme tick and is taking 100 mg of doxy once a day for 2 weeks. My problem is I tried to warn her if that doesn't work he may need more. But, they know someone who was "cured" from Lyme with 2 weeks doxy although this person still has Bell's palsy he claimed to be cured. They won't even focus on boosting his immune system or detoxing. I want to just walk away but what if he ends up disabled? Then I would feel really guilty! Any advice?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that if a person was recently bitten, the doxy should take care of it so it doesn't turn into Chronic Lyme. Shouldn't the doctor who prescribed the antibiotic know how much a person should receive after being bitten. I agree though that boosting the immune system and especially detoxing is very important. I guess all you can do is give all the information you know. You can remain supportive but step back without walking away. I would only feel guilty if I didn't share what I knew. You can't make people follow your advice. You did what you could. Maybe you can recommend some sites that would give them more insight on what this disease can do to people.

I think it depends case to case and you should be cautious after the 2 weeks and watch for symptoms because you may need a stronger and longer dose?

Do you think you could have your cousin watch "Under Our Skin" or read the book "Cure Unknown"?

Br Joseph Burrascano, a very well respected Lyme researcher (used to be a LLMD, but was one of the first to have his license revoked due to treating Lyme patients properly!!), tells us that even the most recent bites - once symptoms of any type show up - need to have at least 400 mgs of doxy a day, split into two doses and for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Using Doxy at a lower dose or for less time may make the person feel better, but it's because the bacteria are being kept from multiplying, but it's not killing any of the bacteria off. Most likely, shortly after abx is stopped, symptoms will return - for sure once some stress comes into that person's life! And then they will have chronic Lyme instead of a simple infection with the bacteria.

Do what you can to convince them of the truth, but in the end, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't force it to drink - you can drown them, but that doesn't mean that they will actually drink the water. Same thing with your cousin - you can present the best information to them, but you will never be able to make them believe it. Do what you can, then they will have to face the consequences of their decision if they choose to ignore your warnings.

I know that sounds kind of cold, but it's the truth. Sorry.

That video (and Jesse Ventura's video on the Plum Island biological weapons facility as the origin of Lyme) gave me nightmares for 18 months.

That kind of treatment is like playing russian roulette. Maybe it will "work" and maybe it won't

I have had countless conversations with people when I tried to warn them of the dangers of inadequate treatment. I told them that it wasn't worth it to take such a gamble. I may as well have been talking to a tree. They just smile politely and then go on to disregard the advice that I have given. There is nothing that you can do.

I told her about the movies, books, websites. But, they are just not interested.... I wish more than anything all the time that someone would have told me how serious a tick bite can be. I feel frustrated because not only could this turn out in tragedy for their family but, its also really hurtful that they are disregarding what I have been through. There have been several people in our area that have passed away from Lyme recently and they still don't recognize how serious it is.

Vcast that video is seriously disturbing I agree once I found out I had Lyme I read books and watched all the clips I could find on Lyme and probably cried for 2 months!

Traveler your right I just hate to see someone suffer unnecessarily.

Heathersdad your right it's not worth the gamble... if only everyone could understand.

You all make me feel so much better every time I post. Thank you all so much I am glad and sad at the same time that I have people who relate. Lots of love and positive thoughts to you all.

some people just run when encountering problems, they just don't want to face them... difficult to handle, I hope you'll get through to them...

I hear you. I wish someone had told me the dangers. Or that you don't always get a bull's eye rash.

Sometimes people have to learn the hard way. It's very unfortunate.

That's okay. We will be here when they get sick.

I just found this forum from typing in Lyme Drs in the Metro DC area. I was bitten by tick end of June 2012, tick size of poppy seed and I had the bullseye.  Went to dr My dr was unavailable so sent me to other dr and he prescribed the antibiotic doxy and never done blood work!!! Said would take a month to get back!!! In Nov 15th I got AFib!! dr treating me for high blood pressure etc!! After doing research and thinking maybe Lyme!? Also one of the blood work places done the Western Blot and heart Dr said I did not have lyme but did show up in blood work the Lyme!  I am trying to find a Lyme Dr in the metro area now!

As Marie said, go to your profile (tab on the top left of page right next to the Log on/off button)

Then go to "edit profile". Once there, scroll down just a bit and you will see where it says "show your email address", directly under where you should have entered your email address. Choose "show my email address", then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the "submit" button so that your choices are saved properly.

In order to send a member an email, click on their user name or the little blue envelope under their user name and it should bring up their email address or even your own email program with their email address already in place.

Responding to Marie...yes, I think it is so difficult for people to deal with and for that reason, people need a strong support system, like family, friends, and sites like this one, to help them with realize what's going on and how to get treatment. At this point, I don't know what would be happening if I hadn't done the research needed for my husband. He wouldn't have done it on his own. We can't take the help we receive lightly. I thank the people on this site for helping us get through this.
