It is extremely difficult to increase sodium levels by drinking something. It can be done like the Sole Garden Peace referred to, but eating salt goes over much better for the taste buds.
Salt and water go hand in hand. If your sodium is low, your fluid volume or water is low. The thing you have to remember is that if you drink a lot of water, your sodium will go down because of the excessive water elimination via urination. Most processed foods now-a-days have sodium in them one way or the other. Americans in general eat way too much sodium and the body must eliminate that sodium. There have been multiple gene mutations at the sodium ion pump that have helped humans eliminate this excess sodium. A problem occurs when people with these mutations don't eat adequate amounts of sodium or consistent amounts of sodium in conjunction with an overly acidic diet. Bipolar is a sodium issue. Epilepsy is a sodium issue. Some migraines are sodium issues. These conditions are different because of the different things that sodium excess or depletion can cause.
Always remember, every medical condition has a cause. Your goal is to determine that cause through observation, education, and even experimentation. Your doctor will attempt to use his education and knowledge to find the cause. If what you have isn't well defined in a medical textbook, he will often not find it.
