Hi all,

A couple of evenings ago a friend called me and she was talking about carrying in all the bottled water she bought.  I e-mailed her this article from Dr. Mercola (I am signed up to receive his free e-mails):

Anyway, I have been using a Brita Water Filter but is that really the best way?  If anyone has any good ideas (I am not putting in a water filtration system since I am renting right now) I would appreciate it...

I dropped my reverse-osmosis and brita setups and bought a Santevia Gravity Water System last year. Its just like a huge brita container that sits on your countertop, but it has a 5-stage filter and alkalizes water to PH8. It also reintroduces natural minerals back into your water. It holds ALOT of water and encourages you to drink more water (soemthing my Brita really didnt do). Overall the Santevia is a very good unit and is great for chronic illness.

However, the biggest limitations of the Brita (and the Santevia) is that they will not remove parasites, viruses and some other adverse chemicals. Seeing how Im already riddled with parasites and my LLMD is convinced my biofilms are parasitic in nature, Im now looking at an upgrade called the "Big Berkey Water Purifier". Thanks vcast, I will research that.   As far as parasites, we all have them.  I have taken this combination of herbs for parasites and it's probably time for me to do it again from Dr. Hulda Clark:

I have a Berkey. We also have a whole house filter with one tank with charcoal. I may have him add one more with zeolite since we're on well water and have several neighbors using chemicals on their property.

I have a reverse osmosis filter. They are pretty expensive (about $200 upfront) and then we spend about $120 a year on cartridges that need to be refilled. Ours, however, does not add minerals back in so I take a trace minerals supplement and add that to the water.

Another downside to RO systems is that they waste water, a lot of it. So we have our waste water set up to go into a barrel outside for watering plants. And our water bill is outrageous in Delaware. We spend ~$80/month on water and sewage fees.

Garden Peace - Do you like your Berkey or is there another brand you would have bought instead? I ask because the next unit I buy I really want to be my "last".

I do like it. I looked around a lot before I decided on this one. It's pretty much just a charcoal filter. I liked the fact that it doesn't use electricity and there's not a lot of maintenance to it. We used to have an RO system, but I got tired of the upkeep. I can't say whether or not you will like it though, it's just a personal choice. I've had not problems with it and the water tastes better with it, especially before we found an honest guy to re-build our whole house system. The water will be room temperature if that matters to you. If you have any more questions about it, just ask.

We use a MultiPure countertop water filter unit - it attaches directly to the tap and the unit sits on the counter.

I have one of those too, which was the first filter I ever bought. I used it when we were living in a different place and had city water.

I hate to tell you this, but well water is no guarantee of problem-free water... I personally know someone who was poisoned by their own well water, which later went on to cost them their liver (they have a liver transplant). So please get your water tested periodically to make sure it is really pure and safe...

Yep! Nothing is guaranteed any more! eyes But so far so good! I'm just glad that I don't have to worry about fluoride and other things that city water can have added to it.

Yes, no fluoride is a good thing! Have you had it tested for pesticides and herbicides or other things? It's good to check for those.

Not yet, our aquifer is quite deep and there's never been any issues with it before, but I have been doing some reading smhair and believe that I want to quietly have some testing done.

I know that taste doesn't mean healthy, but my water does taste great! :-)

Thanks everyone for your input.  I also believe that all water does get tested by law no matter where it comes from.

Anyway, I'm on a budget so I can not afford the water purifiers listed above.  So I have been doing some research (as usual)..

At the moment I can buy another Brita Water Filter or buy PUR as that's what I can afford right now.   I wonder what would happen if I bought activated charcoal and opened up the capsules to my water?  Bad idea?  Duh!!  confused

We have a lot of iron and manganese in our water that the house filter removes (most of it). A neighbor down the road has clear water with no iron or manganese. I wish we could hit the same water source! Our well is around 130' deep. We could go deeper, but no telling if it would be better ore worse.

We aren't required to test it, but I can send a sample to a lab that tests for all kinds of things...for a fee, which isn't exactly cheap.

I have this really cute portable water bottle filter that you can fill up with water anywhere and it filters it for you before you squirt it into your mouth. It is like a sports bottle type. It is made by brita, costs around $7 and you can fill it up 300 times before you have to replace the filter. The water tastes great. it is worth the $7 because you can use any water any where.
