I was bitten 2 years ago. I had 2 massive bull ring rashes on my left thigh. I was wearing jeans when I was bitten.

All the time I see advice about how to prevent Lyme Disease and one of the main ones is to wear long sleeves and trousers. Obviously this isnt the case.

I was bitten in the Uk in my garden. The only thing we can think of is that it was a badger carrying a tick as we had a badger problem in our garden. I lived in a town at the time. Again, not the usual where warnings are concerned.

Any thoughts? Do you think clothing really makes a difference?

Yes, clothing makes a difference. Ticks and other bugs will climb up the leg as high as they can get, where ever they are stopped, they will usually bite there. By wearing long pants, you stopped them from going any higher - but you need to use either Deet, Essential oils or treat your clothing with Permethrin or you can buy clothes that are already treated with Permethrin.

When I go berry picking, it's long pants, long sleeves with the collar turned up, hat and then I either pull my socks up over my pant legs or put duct tape around the bottom edge and then gloves and duct tape around the sleeves and the tops of the gloves. Hair in a braid and pinned up under a hat. Then I use a Deet spray.

Hey, when I got it the last time, I was wearing warm-weather clothes (it was March). However, I wasn't using Deet, Permethrin, or Essential Oils, as they make me sick. I got a big old bull's eye.


Maybe we need Hazmat suits!

I don't recall a tick bite.

But now I either spray shoes with permithrins and pant legs or wear long pant and socks pulled over them and spray permithrins on shoes and socks.

The fact is ticks can crawl up your shoes, clothing etc regardless of what we wear. My mother always wore her socks tucked in etc...like advised before picking blackberries and still found ticks when she'd get home. I thought I was careful too because we had so many deer and other critters around our place but those little boogers can climb on they cling tight.

I don't remember having a bite. My youngest son found an attached tick on his private area and pulled it off. He didn't tell me about till after a year had pasted. My oldest son finds ticks on himself all the time. We were shorts in the summer, it's too hot for anything else.

The recommendations for prevention always state that you should wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts and tuck your pants into your socks. However, none of that does any good unless you take your clothes off and put them straight in the washer when you come inside. The ticks, especially the nymphs, can be hiding anywhere in the the clothing and attach later.

I had long riding boots on as well. What are these sprays that you use? Can you buy them in the uk? Im just thankful it was me who was bitten and not my 2 children who were always in that garden.

LOL!!! Utahgal!! I used to do that before I even knew that I had Lyme too! When I would go berry picking, it's always in some field somewhere, not a manicured, well-kept berry farm somewhere!! The ticks really loved me and I knew that it couldn't be good to have that many ticks on a person, so I took as many precautions as I could.

And yes, I still do that when out picking berries or other wild fruit. We have persimmon trees just down the road, and I'll be going picking next week!! turn My neighbors have always got a huge kick out of seeing me out there - I'm dressed like that and either deep in the bushes after berries or up in a tree after persimmons. I just adore the taste wild fruit produces!!

Fortunately for my hubby (spares him a bit of embarrassment), we have wild strawberries up behind the house!! smilewinkgrin
