In addition to what Superj50 said, brain fog is also a general term to describe feelings in the brain or cognition that are impaired. This can be what you described such as spacing out but it can also be things like when you forget stuff such as how to turn something off, names, or what you were doing.
From what I know, brain cells (neurons) are impacted by Lyme and Co or by the things that we consume to combat the infection (side effects) and also by the inflammation caused by the toxins from die off. The electrical signals that they use to communicate are affected and thus the feeling of brain fog.
