I was in to see my LLND today for my B12 shot. I brought with me my blood reports from this past May so she could see what my b12 levels were when my family doctor tested me. She commented on how one of my labs were high. My platelet count is 402 and normal ranges are 150-400... She said that is a huge sign of Lyme Disease to have a raised Platelet count esp for someone my age (female 26 yrs old), and that it is seen all the time with Lyme/Co infections. "My body is fighting a chronic infection" I've never heard of this before but it makes since as I do have Lyme Disease. My Creatinine is low 51 and normal is 60-115 - she said this is kidneys and maybe im not drinking enough water. I am now!

Anyone else has a slightly elevated Platelet count with Lyme?

My family doctor never mentioned it and I wouldn't of known if I hadn't asked for the report to give my LLND for my B12 levels.

An elevated platelet count means that your blood is thick - and Lyme is far from the only thing that causes it. My husband is disabled due to a condition called Factor V (think Factor 5), which is a vascular issue with higher than normal clotting factor (platelets). He had blood clots from hip to ankle in both legs and each lung was 70% full of blood clots as well.

Does this happen with Lyme? Yes - but it's far from the only thing that causes it.

Many people with Lyme take things that will help to thin the blood - herbs like turmeric, enzymes like serrapeptase or nattokinase, and even some prescription meds can help. It helps get the meds to the extremities and through the smaller vessels in the body - which is necessary to beat Lyme.

Should I be worried? I was only 2 points out of the normal range. All other labs were normal. I'm surprised my family doctor did not mention it? She said all labs were normal. I'm sorry to hear about your husband.

It worked out well - I have him home with me now!!

No, I wouldn't worry about it - but I would be sure that you take something like I mentioned above that will help thin the blood just a bit more so that you get better coverage with the abx.

Did your doc suggest that you take anything?

Traveler - maybe this is why just over a year ago I had a very loud heart beat in my ear 24/7 for 3 months. Doctors couldn't figure out why and I got an MRI + other tests... all normal. Maybe there was a clot somewhere that magnified my heart beat in my left ear.

So thicker blot is common in Lyme then? And people will treat with certain herbs as part of their protocol to thin their blood because of this high platelet count?

Lyme really sucks.

Jessica - what you're describing - the heartbeat in your ear - could be "Pulsatile tinnitus" I probably spelled it wrong.
I dont' know for sure, but I had that, and read here on the forum that's what it could be.

Traveler - No she did not suggest anything, but this was a 5 min appointment for my B12 shot and I had my two sons with me (2 and 5 yrs old) I was in and out. This month I'm building up my immunity with probiotics and nutritional supplements, vitamins then on the beginning of August I'm meeting with her for a 45 min appointment to get me started on the herbs. I wonder if she will suggest something at that appointment now that she has those results.

Yes, Lyme really sucks!!! And yes, it's fairly common - not everyone has it, but enough for it to be a concern for many basically just to be sure that their blood is thin enough to get the meds to circulate into ever nook and cranny in the body.

If you have inflammation, you can start turmeric on your own, it lowers inflammation and thins the blood a bit.

Yes, it was Pulsatile Tinnitus - but that's a symptom of a condition - now what was causing the pulsatile tinnitus? Who knows!

Girlie, I remember searching and searching pulsatile tinnitus and I thought I had an acoustic numera (or however it is spelt...which is a tumour in your ear)... because of the heart beat and balances issues I have. I saw an ENT, MRI was all clear however, and the heartbeat in my ear finally went away after 3 months. The heart beat in my ear was SOOO annoying.

Learnt my balance issues are from Lyme disease by my positive test 2 months ago. It's been a longggg 5 years with so many horrible symptoms for me with no known cause... I'm grateful I came across an article on Lyme Disease this past Spring or else I would of never asked to be tested and would still not know what is wrong with me.

I also had a high platelet count, something in the 500 range. My doc said it could be inflammation and not to worry about it. I do have "thick blood" and circulation issues although my Llmd seems not too concerned about it. Once I started Japanese knotweed my circulation has slowly started improving. I'm also taking turmeric. After starting treatment my platelet count is back down in the normal range.

Thanks Sniogra for sharing your experience. It has freaked me out a little bit. I don't think I have any inflammation anywhere. I do have bad circulation in my fingers at times.

Lyme disease is an inflammatory infection - inflammation is created in between our cells. So we may not have swollen fingers or feet, but we can still have high inflammation.

The bad circulation in your fingers is your sign that you are having issues with this, but it's really a simple fix and usually is only needed during treatment for Lyme.

What is your platelet- 450ish? It's genetic. You'll want to start taking a baby aspirin daily as you get older. It'll help prevent a heart attack with your higher but not too concerning platelet count.

When your platelet gets above 500, I would watch it closely.

Bleeding time and platelet disorders are not always associated as there are blood factors working independently of platelets.

JoOnTheGo my platelet is 402. My LLND believes it is a bit higher because I have a chronic infection - she said "Oh you have a elevated platelet - you sooo have Lyme Disease! We see this all the time with Lyme and co infection" then I forget the doctor explanation she gave me after that lol.

But, maybe it is not from Lyme and the platelet won't get better with treatment. So I'm going to ask my family doctor to re do the blood work when I go in for my girlie checkup next Jan and see what the numbers are.

Your doctor can do a hypercoagulation panel to see if it's genetic. In my case it wasn't. My high platelets were caused by Lyme.

Sniogra, do you know if your platelets number went down with treatment for Lyme?
