Hi - I could really use some advice. My 2 year old daughter suddenly developed a small bullseye type rash on the inside of her lower leg yesterday. She had had a tiny bump there for about
3 or so weeks but it wasn't red and just looked like a little baby skin pimple my kids sometimes get so I didn't think anything of it. Then a few days ago it got a little bigger but not red - I thought it was possibly an ingrown hair. Then yesterday when she woke up from her nap it was red with about
a quarter sized red rash around it - the center was white so it definitely looked like a small bullseye. I called the Dr. and made an apt. for this am. (She has no other symptoms at all) I did a lot of research on Lyme online so I would have an idea of possible treatments etc if it was Lyme. The Dr. looked at the rash this am. It had grown about
1/3-1/2 of an inch by this am - but was not as much of a bullseye as it had been the night before but I had taken pictures of it last night so he saw the bullseye. He said Lyme was a possibility, it could also be a bacterial infection of the skin just from a bite (either tick or spider) or a staph infection. (he did say he didn't think it was staph) He prescribed me 10 days of amoxicillin (150 3x a day) and said the Lyme test wasn't necessary b/c it was probably too early to show up even if she did have Lyme. I pressed him about
the duration of the antibiotics b/c I had read that it should be longer if Lyme was suspected and he said he needed to look it up - when he came back he said he would change it to 3 weeks and also upped the dosage to 200 3x a day.
My questions are these:
Is this the correct way to go about
a possible Lyme infection for her?
Is it still considered a bullseye/Lyme rash if it is not as prominent of a bullseye the next day? It is still slightly white in the center but the red has sort of taken over most of it.
Should I have her tested after the 3 weeks of Antibiotics are over or insist on a test now?
Should I try to find a LLMD in my area (Valley area of Los Angeles) or is that premature?
Thank you so much, I would appreciate any advice. It's hard when your doctor doesn't know much more than you do.
