Was just prescribed Plaquenil. Given the possible side effects of this drug, I was wondering if any of you have seen any great improvement after taking it? On the flip side, has anyone suffered any severe side effects?

What are your overall thoughts on it?

Some take it to improve how macrolide class abx work and penetrate cells. So its tough to gauge improvements. Others say its a mild cyst buster.

I once took it with Rif and mino combo to fight bart and the combo was pretty effective with improving from 50% plateau to 75 - 80% well.

I had no side effects. But have told my eye doctor that I take it so he can monitor any potential eye issues. I have seen no negative side effects.

This drug crushed me.
Would never take again.
This has been my experience.

I took it w/biaxin & then added penicillin and I feel 80% better. I did feel like death when taking it all
so I just stopped one day in the summer. I couldn't believe how much better I felt. I took it all again for 3 weeks and stopped. I pulsed on my own according to how bad I felt. I am going to take all 3 drugs together 1 more time for a few weeks and see where I am at that point.

According to a leading Dr I saw the protocol of biaxin & plaquenil is the cure! He wrote many papers on Lyme and is very well respected.

Is there be any benefit to taking it on its own for chronic Lyme Arthritis or is it best taken along with another antibiotic?

I was told by the Dr who prescibed the plaquenil that the 2 drugs-biaxin & plaquenil work together to
kill the Lyme. The theory is plaquenil changes the cellular PH:

"Some antibiotics were better than others. He then looked at clarithromycin (Biaxin) and azithromycin (Zithromax) which he found had powerful activity against Lyme bacteria in a test tube.
But the antibiotics, by themselves, did not seem to do any good. He found that you need to change the cellular pH (the degree of acidity or alkalinity), making it more or less acidic, to maximize the effectiveness of the antibiotic. This allows the antibiotic to work better i.e. doxycycline seemed to work better when the pH was higher. "

My diagnosis is Fibromyalgia. Last November during my normal every three month doctor visit to get my scripts, I mentioned that I had started having severe joint pain in all my joints. I have been sick for decades and the diagnosis of Fibromyalgia is at least 15 years ago.

So this was the first time I had joint pain. My doc ran lots of tests and they all came back negative. He suggested the Palquenil but warned me that it would take at least 3 months to have an effect. The drug works by building up to a certain level in the blood. He also told me there is a risk to your eye sight. It is a very specific risk and can be guarded against by doing a baseline image of the eyes. After a period of time, you repeat the imaging and they compare it to see if there is a change. They can catch it when there is a very minimal change before any real damage can be done.

At the time I didn't know anything about Lyme. That came afterwards. It did have an immediate effect. My drenching sweats when away completely. It's an antimalarial and so it is not surprising that one of the major symptoms of Babesia went away. Sure enough after about 3 months my joint pain went away.

At about the same time, a new journal article came out which showed that at the normal dosage it takes about 5 years before the concentration in the bloodstream builds up enough to possibly damage your eyes.

With any drug some people will have bad reactions. But I think it's worth a try, you just have to be aware and watch for side effects.

Funny I saw this thread as I'm looking into asking my LLMD to add this to my current Zithromax/Tinidazole combination which I recently switched to from Cefdinir/Tinidazole which was very good for me but the Cefdinir was causing some throat issues.

Aside from Plaquenil believed to improve effectiveness of a macrolide abx it might also bust up Lyme cysts and go after Babesia (which I also have) since its an anti-malarial. Sounds like a good win all around for me at least hoping my LLMD is open to trying for a bit.

A friend of mine uses it. She has great results but relapses as soon as shes off it.
According to Dr.H in his book its typically used in addition to other drugs, it isn't very strong as a stand alone.

Had to stop the Plaquenil. It caused excruciating bone, joint and muscle pain, severe headache and eye pain. Absolutely horrendous. So disgusted with this whole thing and the fact that there is no definitive treatment. Sick of paying ridiculous prices for antibiotics and supplements that don't do $%!+ or make you feel worse. It is beyond my comprehension that they still have no answers after decades of people being infected. It is scandalous.

Unfortunately no one treatment works for everyone, it is dependent on the strain, coinfections and the individuals other health related issues, genetics or simply the way their body responds. Yeah, not helpful.

Also feeling worse, herxing, is a major part of the process....yep, another bummer!!

Valentine Baby- Just saw a thread of yours about monolaurin/biofibrin and that things were going well. However, I see it is an old post. I'm thinking of trying it, but see that you are now going antibiotic route? Wondering what happened. Maybe I won't try monolaurin after all.
