Has anyone taken Biaxin (Clarithromycin)?

My LLMD wants me to take it for bronchitis, but I'm thinking maybe she was also trying to see if it helped me with Mycoplasma and/or Chlamydia Pneumoniae. I haven't tested positive for either, but I'm having a horrible time with lung and respiratory issues, including wheezing, coughing, decreased air sounds, a runny nose, etc.

So far, I've avoided taking it, bc of my history of C. Diff., but I can't go on like this, and the PCP said she couldn't chime in, except to say that she thought I might have "walking pneumonia," as she put it.

I would like to know if anyone else has taken it, and if so, what condition were you treating?

Also, does it cause a wicked herx?

I'm taking it now for the second time.

I was on it from Sep/2014 to Dec/2014 when treating lyme.

Now I'm on it again for Bart treatment (with Rifampin) since mid November.

I did read it is used to at respiratory infections.

I took it for a month with Ceftin when I saw my first LLMD.

I am sorry to hear about lung issues!

I take Clarithromycin (Biaxin). I take 500 mg. (1 tablet twice daily).

I have been taking this antibiotic for several months now (along with other antibiotics). I asked my LLMD what this was going to help treat. She said Lyme and Bartonella.

As for herxing- I wish I could tell you. I Have been herxing daily since I started treatment in February 2015. And yes, I detox daily with different methods.

Hello Teragram,

if your respiratory situation is like you said I think you have to start Abx.(Did you have an X Ray to see how it looks like?) Maybe in a week make a c.diff. test, and later do it systematically(talk to your LLMD about details).

I took it 2 claritro+2 Rifa and had very intense herx or the MCAD showing up.But I started with high dose, I think I did many mistakes at that time, I was not thinking right.

For how long would it be taking Claritro and how do you start, with 1 or right away with 2?I know you are quite sensitive to treatment(like I have been), this is why I ask.

Also I read about your previous post and think you have a very good new LLMD.I hope she can help you in the long run and get you better.

I've been taking it in combo with Mepron for Babesia. I have also taken it in the past for respiratory issues.

It doesn't caused herxes for me, but everyone is different.

Thanks so much for the RSVPs. I see that someone else has also posted about Biaxin, so I'm going to read that post as well.

Finislui, Do you see Dr. A., or have you heard good things about her? Just wondering.

As for herxing, I think I know, unfortunately. Having said that, even if it is used for a resp. infection, can I increase the dose (of Biaxin) slowly?

Also, is Biaxin one of the drugs used to treat the pneumoniaes?

Margaret, I took if for 6+ months along with Amoxicillin and had no issues with it. Both were very effective at bringing down my infection with very minimal side effects. The only side effect that I remember is depression and anxiety the first few days but that happened with Azithromycin too so I think I am sensitive to that class of abx.

As to your PCP, how shameful that she is not helping. Have you had x-rays or an ultrasound of your lungs done to rule out pulmonary impact? Have they checked the bronchial tubes for inflammation?

By the way, I had very similar symptoms as you before. The wheezing, unable to take a full breath,air hunger, coughing, running nose, mandibular pain, and ear pain. I went to the Pulmonalogist, ENT, and other doctors. Ended up being that at night, stomach acid was coming up the esophagus due to a faulty lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and irritating my esophagus, throat, bronchial tubes and the eustachian tubes going to my ears then nose.

I raised the headboard side of the bed by 6 inches and the doctor put me on PPIs. I felt better within a few days. You may want to check and see of this may be the issue for you as well.

Update: I did test positive for Mycoplasma.

I have a wedge under my mattress for the heart burn. I still have asthma, regardless.

I don't want to take PPIs, bc they contribute to C. Diff.
