Well yes, Girlie. That's what I figured. I was surprised that you responded, LOL.
I'm the one who bumped this thread so I could resurrect it, and look into the possibility of using international pharmacies.
I'm not sure you know, seeing as you're on the other side of the border, but a number of Americans use Canadian pharmacies when their insurances don't pay for their meds.
I think the whole thing started with Americans crossing the border to go to the pharmacy, and at some point mail orders were allowed. I think that now, the Canadian pharmacies that deal in this kind of thing are exclusively for that purpose only. In fact, from what I've heard, the actual pharmacies are, for the most part, no longer in Canada, except perhaps just as "storefronts." Most of the pharmacies are in India.
My guess is that once the Canadian pharmacies caught on to what was going on, they decided they didn't want to alienate their American neighbors (pharmaceutically speaking), although I don't know for certain; maybe a NY resident, for example can still cross over from Buffalo, for example, and fill a script in the Toronto area. Who knows.
I just recently started seeing a new LLMD, and apart from the non-Lyme meds, my insurance doesn't cover most of what she prescribes (like Mepron). Mepron costs $768 (I think) out of pocket.
If you're completely uninsured, as a lot of Americans still are, Doxycycline costs about $500 per month (or more) out of pocket, and my vet doesn't even carry it for dogs anymore, which is another reason to try an international pharmacy!
It's the US that forces patients like me into this kind of thing. And although American pharmaceutical companies may not like it, it's really their own fault (theirs and the insurance companies'). If pharmaceuticals weren't so horribly expensive, and if insurance companies didn't refuse to pay for so many drugs, it would be a different matter!!
And while I'm not advocating that anybody else do this, as it could very well be dangerous; I wouldn't be above ordering a drug without a prescription, if I felt I had to. I would just do a lot of research first.
Maybe you're lucky you live in Canada after all?
