Sorry I know this must be somewhere on the forum but I have looked and can't find the info. I am just checking is it ok to take activated charcoal with abx - and is it best to take the charcoal in the evening and of course a couple of hours away from last abx ?? Never taken charcoal before and it has just arrived today so looking forward to adding that to my detox regimen !

I'd say 3h away from any antibiotics/herbs and on empty stomach, with plenty of water.
I no longer take it because i am not that sick, but when i used to, i felt it kicking in in like 2h after taking it.
I consider activated charcoal as the single best detox supplement ever. It is always working, and very inexpensive. Tried lots of other stuff, some do work, but none as potent and complete as this charcoal.

Oh that's great, 'the single best detox supplement ever' even more looking forward to trying it now. Thanks so much mpost, I really value your reply and so, so great to hear that you are not that sick now. Its the Nature's Way activated charcoal, will definitely start with it today. I value all the posts on here and have found so much valuable information that I will be forever grateful. I must say I do always find your posts of particular interest and valuable. Thanks again mpost.

When I was searching for a time where I had an empty stomach, I ran across an article about
a man that got up to go the bathroom in the middle of the night and he would take his then.
I would put mine by my bedside and take it when I rolled over. For some reason (I think one side just gets tired of that position) I roll over about
2 am. Totally empty tummy then and my problem was solved.

That's when I take mine too- when I get up in the night to go to the bathroom - but you need to be one of those people that do this practically every night. I have times where I will go for 3 - 4 days without waking up at night, and then I have to find another time to take it during the day.
The reason for needing to take it on an empty stomach is because it will bind to everything - including nutrients in the food, or supplements or meds of any type and this will not allow the body to absorb it.

Oh thanks for asking this question I was wondering the same thing. Do you take it in capsule form? Or powder? Can anyone recommend a good brand?

Activated charcoal has been around and in use for a very long time. A special brand isn't required, just use a reputable brand - one known for high quality supplements.

Has anyone had trouble with activated charcoal keeping them up at night? I took it for the second time last night, and while I was exhausted, could not sleep for hours. I am wondering if it was the new medicine, or maybe just something else.
I also usually take my banderol and samento 1-2 hours before I go to bed. Do you guys just take them earlier so they aren't a conflict?
I know you have to wait a few hours after you eat before you can take it, but once you do take it, how long do you have to wait to eat? I'm having trouble properly adding this to my schedule of medicines. Taking it in the middle of the night sounds good, but I don't usually wake up during the night.

As good as activated charcoal - or any other binder - is, they do have their issues. You have to keep everything you want your body to absorb (including food!!) and use at least 2 hours away from the binder (charcoal), otherwise it will bind to that as well and usher it out of the body before it will be effective.
Moving your last Banderol and Samento dose up a bit to be sure that you are keeping at least 2 hours between it and the charcoal would be much better.
We have one member that sets an alarm to take their charcoal late at night. I can't do that, as I have serious adrenal issues, so if I'm asleep, I need to stay that way.
You can also use other detoxing methods to help lower your toxin levels so that you don't need the charcoal quite as often. While my goal is to take it nightly, I often end up only taking it 3 - 5 times a week, but I do enough detoxing otherwise that it seems to be enough - for now anyway.

I'd like to point out that not all activated charcoal is created equal, which could account for side effects. Depending on the brand, it can be derived from various sources, including conventional, non-organic coconut shells (with potential for pesticide residue), pine wood, and peat moss. I have a sulfite/sulfur sensitivity and can't consume coconut products, so I had to call around to customer service reps of supplement companies to verify the sources (for the record, Solaray uses peat moss in their AC, which I can tolerate).
Additionally, the capsules are often made from gelatin--which could cause reactions in sensitive individuals--as opposed to standard vegetable cellulose capsules.

And, as a former and satisfied consumer of Nature's Way activated charcoal, I can tell you that my bottles always listed 3 hr. spacing.
I took the stuff in middle of the night if I got up to use the bathroom. I had no intentions of setting an alarm sooooo.....sometimes I took it, sometimes I didn't ;)
I regretted not starting it sooner.....and am happy I don't need it any more :)

And I'm jealous you don't need it any longer, Cd! ;)
Thank you for pointing out those issues, Trompeloy. Not having those issues myself, I didn't think to list them.

Does anybody experience constipation from the charcoal? I read that it can be a side effect.

Activated charcoal is very safe to take even for long periods of time. The biggest side effect is constipation, but that can usually be avoided by making sure to drink at least 8 ounces of water each time you take it.
The biggest issue with using charcoal is keeping it at least 2 hours away (before and after) from anything you wish your body to absorb - it's a lot harder than it sounds when in treatment. That's why many are taking it when they get up during the night to use the bathroom.
I use it off and on through out my treatments, as I need it - or when I can take it. Many times when I wake up in the night, I have to take more meds, so it's not always easy for me to get enough.

Thanks Traveler:
I understand the difficulty in taking it two hours away from other supplements. That is a bit of a problem..I have to take my thyroid meds early in the morning so it does not interfere with my coffee with almond milk. Taking the charcoal could be an issue for me too. I am just thinking that I could probably take it two hours before dinner because i take most of my supplements with a meal. As long as the charcoal does not have to be taken on an empty stomach it probably could be doable.
Thanks for your input.!!!
