and ....the antimicrobial treatment will probably consist of two - four weeks of antibiotics. Anyone with symptoms after...will be called Post Treatment Alzheimer's Disease Syndrome.

The issue of infection causing Alzheimer's has suddenly had a big airing in our mass media here in UK.

It is not just the Telegraph, but other top British dailies eg the Independent, the Daily Mail and the Times.

Dr Judith Miklossy, Lyme researcher, is one of the authors of the large international group of scientists whose article in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease sparked off the media attention.

These British papers, which have a combined readership in the millions, have mostly emphasised a viral cause, but some of us have been writing in their comments section highlighting the powerful evidence in support of Borrelia as a cause.

For example, Dr Alan MacDonald has recently found Borrelia in the autopsy brain plaques of people who died with Alzheimer's, using highly accurate Molecular Beacon DNA Probe technology.

Even more shockingly, he found that biofilms of Borrelia showed up in exactly the same places as the amyloid in the plaques (hallmark protein of Alzheimers). When you look at the paired photos, one showing a plaque stained for amyloid, the other showing the same plaque stained for Borrelia, they look virtually identical except for the different colour stain used to detect each.

I can't give treatment advice as I'm not the patient's doctor (I did train as a nurse, but even a doctor could not recommend treatment without seeing the patient). However, I don't see that the elderly person has anything to lose by having some testing for Lyme, ideally from a Lyme-literate lab.

The problem you have raised is exactly the reason we're doing this work - Dr MacDonald would like to be able to offer his DNA probe testing to all who could potentially benefit . The DNA probes are extremely accurate when positive, and it's almost impossible for anyone to argue that it's just a "false positive", or an indicator of past infection, (as they can with positive antibody tests).

I don't think things are necessarily "too late" just because this person is 80 - there was a man with quite severe dementia who began to regain his abilities after antibiotic therapy under a Swiss LLMD.

Sadly his own doctors stopped treatment and he deteriorated and died. After death his brain was found to contain Borrelia DNA .

I think that some LLMDs would be prepared to treat with abx if they felt there was evidence of Borrelia infection. We have a crowd-funding appeal going to help Dr M train up other pathologists so that this testing can be offered more widely.

Until we manage to get more lab workers trained and more awareness of the issue, it is very hard. In the meantime I think that as long as you are sure that there are no contra-indications, there is no harm in encouraging an older person with dementia to use certain herbal or food products that are known to have anti-biofilm or anti-borrelia action. But check very carefully first with their doc - even some ordinary over-the-counter herbal medicines or foods are sometimes contra-indicated because they interact with other medications or the person's condition etc..

well that explains my brain/memory problems as I've had hsv1&2 for 33 years now and the herpes viruses that cause rosieola, chicken pox, and mono, I have reactivation of all three. ... my Lyme and co-infections keep coming back negative and I believe that Lymies who continue w/chronic symptoms is due to the viral load; however WHY or WHAT prevents the immune system from suppressing these viral loads-Thats the million dollar question???
