Biaxin, Rifampin, and Mepron

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can offer an opinion.....I was on Xith and Mino for over 10 weeks and two weeks ago my LLMD changed my protocol to Biaxin (2 per day) and Rifampin (build up to two twice a day). She wanted to see my after two weeks so I went in yesterday. She decided she needs to be more aggressive so is adding Mepron Tues, Thurs, Sat to alternate with the Rifampn Mon, Wed, Fri.

Doesn't this sound too agressive? Why not just treat the Bartonella first and then later add the Mepron for Babesia? Also, if I have a bad reaction (which I have to several previous antibiotics), we son't know which one is causing it.

Anyone ever hard of this protocol?

I don't think pulsing Babesia and bartonella medications are really advisable. Also, both these at the same time can be hard on your liver, can counteract each other, and might just be too hard on your body. If I were you, I'd do as you suggested, start on one and go to the other.

Lots of lyme docs are this aggressive. I know the dr. J's are

I don't know about treating with rifampin and mepron at the same time...because they're both hard on the liver.

But, pulsing is an accepted method of treating - even for bart and babs.

And as jennydancingfish stated the Dr.J's are. (I knew one Dr. J. did but not the other)

Thank you all for your input. I've made the decision to at least do 6 weeks on
just Biaxin and Rifampin, starting when I reach the prescribed dosage of Rifampin. Then we'll see. I'm really scared about Rif side effects and also about Mepron. Doctor might not be too happy but it is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Are you going to pulse them?

Make sure you get monthly tests - that include liver function.

Interestingly, my liver enzymes (that had previously climbed on lyme meds) - were great on Rifampin (go figure) and to this day - a year later...still are.

Girlie, no, not going to pulse the Biaxin and Rifampin (do you think I should?) but if I add Mepron later that will be pulsed with the Rifampin.

MY LLMD not only gives me monthly liver tests but I've had an EKG twice ince I started this protocol less that 3 weeks ago.

That's great about your liver function; may mean you're getting better !

May I ask what your experience has been on Rifampin?

I don't want to say whether or not you 'should' pulse the biaxin and Rifampin.

I started taking Rifampin with mino or biaxin every day for several months (maybe 8 or 9?)

And...now I'm pulsing.

My experience on Rifampin hasn't been too bad. My LLND wanted me to start off 300 mg once daily - I think for two weeks - check my liver enzymes before going to 300 mg twice daily.

Instead I actually split the 300 mg cap and took approximately half of it - once a day for several days...(5 I think?) and then went to 300 mg once daily for a few weeks...then finally 300 mg twice daily.

He told me to take on an empty stomach. I usually take it and wait half an hour - that's all I give it before eating.
I've had issues with my throat...so I'm careful about it now.
