IV antibiotics help tremendously if you are having GI problems. That's a given, so think about
that option.
For anxiety and depression taking various anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, etc. could cause anxiety and depression. It's in the literature of sometimes doing the opposite of what it is suppose to mask. This is especially true when trying various different kinds of these drugs. Withdrawal is also another possibility and w/ Lyme will only make anxiety and depression MUCH WORSE. AND STOP TAKING things that work on the GABA receptors such as Benzos, L-theanine, GABA, etc. At least work on things that inhibit it for a small amount of time like Ginseng, Royal Jelly, or Lemon Balm/rosmarinic acid. This will sensitize the receptors and work in the long run, rather than agonizing them which will work for a short period of time but cause problems down the road.
So what causes anxiety and depression? I had it, still do but it has lessened significantly. Why? First I addressed the infection and went on IV antibiotics that reach the brain, IV rocephin worked tremendously. It firstly is a cell wall inhibitor and stops spirochetes in their tracks. Spirochetes cause many of the problems associated with Lyme infection. It's also an anti-inflammatory antibiotic! Same with minocycline, so pairing these up is often good if you have neuro problems due to infection.
Why anxiety? Your own body secretes Quinolinic acid down the kynurenine pathway/Tryptophan pathway. In normal cases Quinolinic acid and Glutamate work by being released and inhibited appropriately. However, in an infection ridden brain, there's an over-excessive production of Quinolinic acid, which is a Potent neurotoxin and agonist of NMDA receptors.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? If you have an infection in your brain such as Lyme your body will metabolize L-Tryptophan found in the foods you eat and use it to make Quinolinic acid to inhibit and destroy the infection, however it doesn't work and hurts you, the host more than it does the infection. Where does depression come into play? Well since your body is using most of the e L-Tryptophan to make the neurotoxic metabolite, Quinolinic acid down this pathway, it can't make aqueduct amounts of serotonin because L-Tryptophan is needed. Under normal circumstances there's a balance, in your case there very well could be a major imbalance.
So, less serotonin, more QUIN will cause serious neurological problems because QUIN and Glutamate both found HIGH in Lyme patients over-fire the NMDA receptors leading to neuronal death, which causes this jumpy, fight or flight, wired but tired anxious feeling.
Rosmarinic acid found in Lemon Balm, high amounts of Curcumin, Norharmane, which I wouldn't take, High dosages of Magnesium Glycine can help tremendously by working to inhibit the overfiring of the NMDA receptors and/or inhibiting the IDO enzyme needed to make QUIN.
