How long does it take for doxycyline to work?

For Lyme? That's impossible to answer. If you were just infected with Lyme, or RMSF for the very first time, and got on the doxy within a few days, and you hadn't had any symptoms yet other than a usual immediate suspects and rash, 30-90 days of it @ 200 mg 2X day might work if you're lucky. But I wouldn't bet on it.

ETA: Oh, and if you have a half way decently working immune system with no other issues...That's key.

If you've been infected for a longer length of time, long enough to have arthritic symptoms, confusion, that sort of thing, Doxy will only get the superficial bacteria. And it may drive some of it into hiding using biofilms, cycts, cross the blood brain barrier....That's why many LLMD's use a combo method of attack.

But even still abx has it's pitfalls for too many people, who need another plan of action.

Plus of course, no matter what, all treatment should be continued 2 months past the cessation of all symptoms. All of them.


Sometimes people have gone untreated for so long permanent organ damage has been done and they need to continue some kind of supportive treatment for that.


Probably more of an answer than you were wanting to hear. I'm sure you've read on hear long enough to have expected an answer like this. Wish we had lots of people here that can attest to an easier scenario.

With all antibiotics...we can't predict how long we'll see results.

Generally a recent infection...results should be pretty quickly....but once the infection has disseminated...it could take a few months before you see improvement.

But, you could herx sooner...which tells you it's killing the bacteria.

Yes, it works on biofilms...but not cysts.

For cysts, you need Flagyl, Tindamax...or GSE.

for me, it worked right away, but that's bc i was only infected for 4 months - so as the others said, it does not dig deep nor does it cross the BBB - so it also depends on your symptoms

what dose are you on?

and yes, serrapeptase busts biofilms. i was on both serrapeptase and doxy at the same time. i think that had alot to do with my success.

I have gse thanks. smile I'm just trying to approach these bugs a different way for a bit. I'm so darn sick of them. I hadded an er doctor who finally believed I have lyme and prescribed me doxycyline for a month. Now I know it's not a long time but if it makes a difference, maybe I can get my regular doctors to prescribe more.

I'm not sure how long I've had lyme but I didn't start showing symptoms until 10 months ago and I haven't started it yet

100 mg twice daily of doxy won't be enough...especially on it's own.

You should be on 200 mg twice daily...it's okay to start lower...and then get up to full dose.

Since it's not a new infection, you will need other antibiotics....one to add to the doxy.

Also, it's likely that you have at least one coinfection.

Doxy does in fact cross the bbb. However circulation within the brain may not carry it to greatest or sufficient effect. Adding knotweed or resveratrol can increase the effectiveness.

Sick and misdiagnosed for 6+ years. Started to feel better on the 9th week of doxy (300 mg /day) and chloroquine. Now on doxy and flagyl, more good days than bad ones.
