PMM - try using a "neck roll" right below your pillow. This first article in this series shows and explains it pretty well. You can use a towel to see if it will help, but a pillow that is made to support the neck while sleeping is much more effective.
I went the extra mile and bought a special pillow that would support my neck properly while laying on my back so my neck wasn't at an usual angle, and while I sleep on my side and it's been a real huge help to me. I started out using 'neck rolls' to see if it would actually help me though.
I've found that on my bad days, if I will use heat first on my neck for 20 - 30 minutes, then about an hour later, using ice when I go to bed, and use my pillow, I usually do much better with pain levels in the cervical spine area at least!
Traveler, do you have ongoing I/C symptoms? I still can't comprehend that my urologist was in denial or totally ignorant of the IC/BART connection.
