C3a and C4a are split products of complement activation from the immune system. Each activates inflammation and stimulates smooth muscle spasm in small blood vessels, amongst other duties. C3a and C4a are typically both high in Lyme and other bacterial infections. C3a is low or low normal, and C4a is high 99% of the time in other biotoxin illnesses, most commonly in mold toxin illness.

I'm so sorry your son is having such a hard time. We as adults struggle with the emotional herxing and just the ups and downs of this stupid disease. Add the inexperience of youth and puberty on top of it all and it's just not fair. Poor guy! Getting some symptomatic relief will help, others have great suggestions. I also agree that it might be time for a fresh set of eyes for him.
If he's able, I'd try to get him out of the house a little bit too, interacting with the outside world can remind us that we aren't alone, that there is life outside our illness, and these are all good things worth fighting for. Is there a church group or hobby group he could do like once a week if he's feeling okayish?
We have a bible study small group that we attend and even if I feel like crap, connecting with friends once a week is always encouraging. Most of the time I'm at home, in bed or in my recliner. I get very wiped leaving my house. I will pray for you guys!
