Flucanazole - questions...

All I can give is an educated guess. Flucanazole is for yeast, yes?

I would imagine that you should take it 5 days on 2 days off and repeat while on the abx.

Once daily 2 hours after last abx. Not sure about the with food or without, because I'm thinking it wouldn't matter unless you're eating something that encourages yeast growth or has it in it, which I don't think you'd do anyway.

I did find this: "Rifampin: Administration of a single oral 200 mg dose of Fluconazole after 15 days of rifampinadministered as 600 mg daily in eight healthy male volunteers resulted in a significant decrease in Fluconazole AUC and a significant increase in apparent oral clearance of Fluconazole. There was a mean ± SD reduction in Fluconazole AUC of 23% ± 9% (range: –13 to –42%). Apparent oral clearance of Fluconazole increased 32% ± 17% (range: 16 to 72%). Fluconazole half-life decreased from 33.4 ± 4.4 hours to 26.8 ± 3.9 hours. (See PRECAUTIONS.)"

Also the site said it made no difference if it was taken with or without food, but it also said a person should see results within 24 hours of just taking one pill!

Girlie, don't take Diflucan while you're taking Rifampin.
Those two interact, both large P450 drugs.
My LLMD specifically had me held off the Diflucan while I was on Rifampin.

Secondly, don't take breaks in between Diflucan dosages... if you do you're just inviting your yeast to develop resistance. Fluconazole resistance is not uncommon.

Wait until you're finished Rifampin. Then take it consistently until it's finished.

As far a dosage goes, it shouldn't matter. For what it's worth, I was on 150mg twice a day (300mg total), and I weight 140 lbs.

So, re: P450 is probably why what July stated is happening. The Riffy is inhibiting the flucanazole.

I may be on Rifampin for another two months...

I should wait until I can do a week? or two weeks?

I have 2 weeks of 200 mg left.

I don't think I will be getting anymore.

So, 2 weeks isn't worth it? I will have to wait until I'm off the Rifampin...but it will still only be 2 weeks worth...as my LLND most likely write me a script for more.

I took duflican for two months - for systimic yeast.

month one every day

month two every other day

had liver enzyme test at week five- was high, not to bad though per LLMD

I dont remember mg- can look at bottle when i'm home.

I herxed at month 2, NOT month one.

fungal meningitis? geez...how would I know?

I did test negative by pcr for Candida...but pcr's often miss infections...so can't rely on that.

No, I can't get the powdered nystatin. I did do some nystatin capsules that were compounded at the Pharmacy...that was awhile back...didn't notice anything - good or bad.

Rikky1 - so 1 pill is 100mg or 200 mg?

Mine are 100 mg.

I guess i need to make a decision whether to stop treatment now and do a round for a week or so...or wait...

I just don't want to put it off if it's needed.

There is a "conventional" antibody candida albicans blood test- tests for past and present. I never had other yeast tests done though- since I was positive with candida more than once.

Just looked at my bottle - its 200mg tabs.

I took one daily for first month, then one every other day for a second month. I finally herxed on it at about the 4th or 5th week.

My LLMD didnt want to mess around, since Nysatin did nothing for me.

I was pretty prone to getting it in the past- burped, bloated from food, refulx ect.

With all due respect to your doctor, this is an excellent way of creating a fluconazole resistant strain of fungus in your body.

I hear you MS...but I see that many LLMD's do have their patients take it every other day...or just twice a week...

I'm torn.

So, if I stop abx and take the diflucan for 4 days straight...and I don't feel any different..ie herx...is it safe to say I can stop there?
I don't really want to be off the abx at this point for two weeks...or even a week.

So it's either I take them for 4 days straight... or I wait ...maybe in a month or two I'll do a longer break.
