is dapsone a sulfa drug ?

I think it acts the same way ...bactrim boiled my blood and started a vasculitis thing i been scared of abx since but managed on bvt ,roceph and zith + herbs and everthing else ... (like everthing )..he gave me script for dap and u know howitz likes it but is anybone on it have any experienc ? ..thanks

Not a lot on it. it's a sulfone.

If you're allergic to sulfa based drugs...maybe not a good idea to take it...or at least watch for allergic reactions.

I get adverse reactions to Bactrim after a few weeks on it due to the sulfa. My llmd said that Dapsone would not cause the same issue.

I refused to take Dapsone though because the side effects claim if you have reactions to sulfa drugs you are more likely to have negative reactions and severe complications when taking Dapsone.

If your gut says not to take it then don't.

I tried a very low dose of dapsone for a week. Noticed immediate improvement with swelling behind my knee, but side effects were really rough. My platelets went down rapidly as well. My doctor was trying it as a first line drug because of Dr. H. Said she also had another patient that was seeing symptom improvement but was turning yellow from jaundice. Seems to be tough on the organs.

I started on 25 mg of dapsone. Suppose to add 25 mg each week to reach my maintenance dose of 100mg.
On day 5 of taking the 25 mg I started with terrible chest pain and my breathing was very rapid. This happened before when I was on a sulfa drug.
I had to stop taking it. Went and talked to my LLMD and he believes that it was a die off and told me to continue the drug but introduce it slowly. I'm up to day 4 of 50mg and back to having extreme chest pain with some trouble breathing.
Anyone else have this side effect when taking dapsone?
I had a similar experience with my past LLMD back about 4 yrs ago when taking a sulfa drug and he took me off of it, said I was allergic and put me on prednisone for a week.
It's scaring me! I'm suppose to go up to 75mg in 3 days. Not sure if I will be able to. I so badly want to do this protocol.
Tired of being home bound for the past 4 yrs!

My doc told me he had a lady take a full year to get up to 100mg. I think you need to hold longer at 25 mg. Even take every other day. I would definitely be scared with chest pain/breathing. Are you having bloodwork every 2-3 wks? We know it can cause anemia so should be on levocourin and folate to combat. The trouble breathing could be anemia?

It does require frequent blood tests. I was on dapsone for 2 months when doc pulled me off. I do believe it was the beginning of me feeling horribly fatigued and I've never recovered. And if I recall, I was on 100 mg the whole time. wow! I guess I know now why it was so hard on me.

Don't be discouraged by my experience, Dr h still recommends it for the "novel persisters."

Did you start at 100 mg? If so, YIKES! Sorry you are still feeling poorly. Do you think extra folate may help?

I'm on a supplimental with plenty of methyl b.
My levels are good and I don't even know if dapsone had anything to do with the way I am feeling now. my life is a big guessing game 😟

I do get blood work done every week. I'm on 50 mg of dapsone now and only having some tightness in chest. Doing better. I might stay on 50 mg for longer then a week and slowly add additional 25 mg. Thank you for your response.

yes you need to test your blood on a regular basis, that antibiotic is very dangerous. however it is the current nuclear bomb in chornic lyme treatment, so KEEP AT IT !!

if your blood levels are fine (check with the LLMD what tests u need to do) then what u experience is almost certainly a herx.

If the chest tightness continues....I would talk to your Dr. again...before increasing to the next dose.
