BJD, I think you should take the sleep when you can get it. The variances with you could just be related to the cycles of your body with the bacteria in it.
It would be better to get up and do something boring than to just lie there trying to sleep, or try self-hypnosis. But if your forced sleep restriction works, and your body can thrive on reduced hours, there are many people who don't need 8 hours.
What I'm thinking-hoping summer, is that IF I can discipline myself to restrict time spent in bed to nightly average sleep (6.5 hrs) , plus 10%, I can even it out, and gradually increase to get back toward normal. Even if I could just even it out, I would eliminate the stress I feel from a poor nights sleep. That's the theory of sleep restriction therapy anyhoo.
When drugs, supplements or herbs don't work, all that's left to try are behavioral strategies.
I have a book called the effortless sleep method that is all about
sleep hygiene. It's a great book and makes a lot of sense. Author suggests getting up and doing something boring as well. She also rejects sleep restriction therapy and makes a good case for it. I have another book that recommends srt however. Upon analyzing my pattern of having good nights followed by bad nights, srt seems to make sense. Either way, discipline is key. The bed is comfy and warm and the house is cold.
