I've already posted about the headaches I've had since starting Doxycycline, which may or may not be detox-related. But over the past several days I'm also experiencing flashes of burning/itching/prickly sensations--hands, feet, head, elbows, just about anywhere. It's not unbearable but it is annoying and worrying. I fear there's damage being done to my nerves.

Perhaps this could be from Lyme being "stirred up". I'd buy that if I had chronic Lyme. But as I've said before, I began my treatment ten days after my bite with NO symptoms other than a rash. How could I start treatment symptom-free and THEN get symptoms? Doesn't make sense. It would be a recurrence of something I never had.

So, once again, what are normal Doxy side-effects? Has anyone else diagnosed early without symptoms gone through this? (Sorry for taking up space with all these posts. I know my problems are minor compared to a lot of folks, but it's new territory for me regardless. Thanks.)

Lyme is a missmash of symptoms and the list of symptoms is HUGE. The symptoms move around and they come and go.

Treating lyme does not mean that symptoms gradually lessen in "x" amount of days. As you can see we have some people that have been treating for YEARS.

So it can be difficult to tell -- is it lyme or is it the med.

You can back off the med and see if it lessens. You can detox more and see if it lessens.

This certainly could be sun sensitivity with the doxy.

Spoke with the LLMD's assistant this morning. Apparently this IS a Herx reaction, which blows my mind.

Here is how I understand disease and recovery:

Feel unwell > Get treatment > Feel better

Here is what has happened for me:

Feel fine > Get treatment > Feel worse

Excuse me, but how can you have a "recurrence" of symptoms that never existed? That's not a recurrence! But whatever, I'm sticking with the protocol, even if it feels like I'm riding this horse over a cliff.

When I was first reading about lyme I continually read "you will get worse before you get better." I thought that was so strange of a statement.

However, these bugs like to hide out in deep crevices of our body. Down in joints, in cartilage, etc.

So we take meds to go after them and they run to hide from the meds. They seek out injured or weak spots in the body because that is a place they can get the upper hand. It is a compromised place and not strong.

The chase is on. The bugs move and we continually chase them until the hiding places are no longer available.

And in the meantime we are getting our entire body ready and strong to take over and not rely on meds. We support each and every system and organ. We build them up to get them in tip top shape so they can function at their optimum capacity.

All of this takes time. The longer the bugs have had to colonize, the longer it will take - in my opinion.

Patience is paramount to healing. It will be the slow and steady participant that wins and lyme will try your patience immensely.

And then tonight I picked up Stephen Buhner's book Healing Lyme. Herx reactions get minimal treatment; he says only 15% of patients get them, and even those tend to be mild. If that is the case, why is it mentioned so much in these forums? I'm not convinced my symptoms are a Herx. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I can count one hand the number of times I've taken antibiotics in my lifetime, and my body simply doesn't like them.
