I found this in a quick search. I thought it was interesting because it discussed the antimicrobial and anti-fungal effect of shiitake mushrooms and they were shown to contain niacin among other things. It also talks about
the higher the phenolic content, the greater the anti-oxidant capabilities. Niacin has multiple phenolic rings in its chemical structure and it wouldn't be a stretch to hypothesize that the phenolic rings help in the DHPR pathway. When the DHPR pathway is reduced, hyperphenylalaninemia can occur. It also can occur in fungal infections and there is a direct link between DHPR reduction and the immune response. There are a lot of articles relating to that.
