Son's NEW symptoms: from meds? Migration?

My son's right knee is swollen (bottom of knee cap) and he has pain above his ankle. If you ran your finger over the spot above ankle that is where the pain is.

He is limping.

Are these new symptoms from meds pushing stuff out?

How concerned should I be that he is now limping?

Those are Lyme symptoms. I don't remember if he is in treatment for Lyme at this point, or only Babesia? It may just be a cycling of symptoms, or it may be due to his herxing that is bringing it on right now.

No matter what, be sure to let his doctor know.

Ice for the knee to bring down the swelling and ask about anti-inflammatories.

The pain in his ankle may or may not respond to heat or ice, but it's worth a try.

My knees and ankles go through times of increased swelling and pain, and I always try heat first, then cold if the heat didn't help. I also use anti-inflammatory herbs, and other things to help this old body get through it all.

Yes. He is in treatment. Amoxy/Mino/Sepra

I was wondering if this is from his new bite. Guess we will never know.

What anti-inflammatory herbs do you give?

I gave him Wobynzyme PS this morning and I put essential oils and calm-mag cream on him last night.

I'll call J. Clinic, which means I should have a response by next week (LOL! Sad but true).

Will ice. I don't have heating pad, any ideas what I can do for heat?

I'm having a very brain-impaired day

Anti-inflammatory herbs that I use: Turmeric, ginger, quercetin and bromelain when it gets bad.

What you did was good!! Now, see if any of these other things are appropriate for him.

Love heat sock - but we don't use a microwave. I'll get heating pad today. Will just hot compress in mean time or heat rub.

Those are good alternatives too! It's just that the heat sock and heating pad need 'less attending', so they are more convenient.

Huddie - it sounds like the treatment is causing a herx.


So he started the Septra?

Hope he feels better soon.

I had a knee flare - when I was treating bartonella...and it slowly resolved and within a week it was 80% better. Mine wasn't swollen though...just sore...I couldn't bend it.

Hope the little guy is doing a little better. I'd also try detox soaks if he doesn't mind a boring bath. Also, japanese knotweed is a pretty good anti-inflammatory.

Let us know how he's doing.

I have a torn meniscus (that needs surgery)
When it is flaring, my ankle kills me,,, I believe it is tightening to stabilize the knee... I think that all these things are pretty much connected,,,, Maybe ankle senses knee is wonky and trying to protect.....?

Hi Huddie,
As others have mentioned, definitely Lyme. This is the first spring that so far DS has not had the swollen knee. He did have a bit of pain in opposite elbow and shoulder a few months ago but it left quickly.

We have drugstore braces for every body part, lol. He wears them and gets some relief. When swollen and playing sports he wears them all day and for practice. You could try that. Generally it passes after a few weeks. We tried magnesium spray and Blue Emu cream but not much relief. I did buy Bluebird CBD oil which we will try if it happens again.

DS is on heavy meds and it's day 2 AKA Tuesday so per usual he is home, but not feeling better yet so may be home tomorrow too. Tell your DK to hang in there - it means it's working on killing off stuff. Epsom salt bath if he will do it would be great too or he can ice, per JC's advice to DS.

Ak, thanks for the well wishes. I think you are right ankle overcompensating for swollen knee.

I really hope he can ski again next year. He is a competitive downhill skiier, it's his 'sport' and he didn't ski once this year.

Yang, I'm sorry your DS is not feeling well again. His school sounds very, very understanding. I hope that happens for us. It is always Tuesday's for him. I wonder why it's not later in the week.

I hope he's better soon.

If he is a skier could those places be old injury spots?

Lyme sure made my old injury spots raise up their ugly heads.

Good question. This is a chicken and egg scenario.

His knees have bothered him for several years, but we also think he's had lyme for years.

He was seeing a top sports medicine specialist who diagnosed him with tendonitis. No one ever thought Lyme.

Seems like for kids achey knees are very common.

He never had a ski accident or knee surgery.

I had super bad knees way before lyme and one of my first symptoms was even worse achy knees. Now in remission, I just have the same achy knees as before lyme.

Lyme loves weak spots. It thinks it can inhabit and live there.

I iced my knees constantly while I had lyme and made it as in hospitable as possible for lyme.

The best thing I did all last summer was swimming in cold water. My knees felt wonderful. ICE was my super friend and kept the lyme out of my knees.... but then it found my old sprained ankle and my trigger thumb from my target practice. Oh gosh and my floating rib.... That was the most awful pain.

Heat patches gave my son relief last night but it sounds like ice may be better?

I may try and get JK in him.

I hope it's ok to mix with the abx.

Do watch for an increased herx with adding in JK during a herx since he is sensitive as well though. I herxed on JK until I got to 6 drops, then with each significant increase I herx still. I'm not trying to tell not to start it, as it's an anti-inflammatory as well, just be watchful.

Do you think I should try Stephania Root for him or just give him Turmeric capsules.

Actually, I'm off the tincture and on to the dry herb because I reached 25 drops twice daily - but boy can I herx on the JK! Ick. I'm at nearly a full dose of Sida Acuta though!! smile LOL.

You could definitely try any herbs that you believe will be of help to him, just watch him for herxing.

I'm a big fan of turmeric, so asking if I think he would benefit from it is like asking if I want some chocolate! LOL! (well, of course!!) - but it doesn't help everyone the same way it helps me, so it's another thing to try. I can't go more than 3 days without turmeric without quite a bit of increase in my swelling and joint pain.

Oh, and for what it's worth, that's the exact same spot that I usually hurt with my knees - just below. Same thing with my hip, often it's just below the hip, actually the top of the femur that hurts lots. I do get pain in the joints themselves often, but the other pain, like what your son has can be pretty intense too. If not addressed, it can make my whole leg ache severely, so I don't want to walk or stand, or even be connected to it.

So impressed that you are up to so much JK and Sida. Wow.

How long did it take you overall? Were your herxes incapacitating? I am asking for myself, not Will.

I'll start him on turmeric and go from there. Turmeric mixed with chocolate - yum.

I think I'm giving JK one more shot to help with my brain inflammation. Should I stop Stephania if I start JK?

Will I ever NOT be confused over herbs? nono

LOL!! YES!! There will be a day that you will suddenly begin to understand the herbs!! Just give it time.

I would suggest that you not combine stephiana and JK, as they are interchangeable in the protocols - so it would be 'double dipping' into the herbs that do the same thing. With as sensitive as you are, you could herx easily if using both. I would suggest that you chose one or the other - at least for now. There may come a time when you can tolerate the use of both of them at the same time, but right now, it's not something I would encourage.

LOL! It's been a struggle!! No, I don't do 'incapacitating' herxes any more - I avoid those more than I avoid ticks!!! I have herxed enough to not want to do much of anything during the day and have had a not so good night - but that's as far as I'll allow it to go, when I can control things anyway. Most of my herxing has been contained to neuro and muscles pain/twitching/spasms and brain fog/issues, digestive upset (which may be more because of needing more support than actual herx).

Yesterday was stressful/busy and today I have some brain fog, am easily distracted and spelling issues (LOL!), but otherwise I feel okay!! Minor aches and pains, sore shoulders, and a bit of brain fog, but that's not bad. I'll be upping my dose again in another few days....
