Liver support while on Rifampin

Hello!

I just started Rifampin and Zithromax for Bart and was wondering if liver support is needed as well? I read that alcohol is a major no no with Rifampin (not that I'm really drinking anyway these days) and that it's hard on your liver. I saw an old post on the subject but wanted to hear first-hand if anyone has recommendations on liver support.

Also, are there any supplements/herbs to avoid while on these drugs?

Liver support that many of us use is Milk Thistle extract (except if you have an allergy to ragweed)


but, a co-Mod recently asked me about MT and Rifampin - - perhaps not being good taken together - they may be both on the Cytochrome P450 list meaning that taking the MT could affect the blood levels of Rifampin.

I know that I had switched to Pekana Apo-Hepat prior to going on Rifampin...my LLND thought it was a better option...but he didn't mention that MT would be contraindicated.

Maybe have a discussion with your LLMD about it?

Thanks, Girlie. I'm not familiar with Pekana Apo-Hepat. Where did you buy it, and how much did you take and how often? From a quick search, it sounds like it also supports the liver?

Did you continue to take it after the Rifampin was finished? Also, how long did you take Rifampin, and did you see good results from it for Bart?

My LLND has it in his office and just sends it to me.

the Pekana line are mentioned on the Tiredoflyme.com Detox section.


It's not easy to find. Here's one place - It looks like a lot of good products for people with lyme:

But it is a .ca site so I'm thinking it's Canadian.

I put 15 drops in 1/2 cup of water and sip on it. I was instructed to take it twice daily, but I usually only do once daily.
Yes, it is liver support.

...and yes, I continue to take it, even though I'm not on Rifampin anymore. It worked for me, so I don't want to switch now.

I took Rifampin for a looooooooonnnnnnggggg time. about a year and a half in total.

I did have some resolution of symptoms.

Symptoms that resolved in that time
- tailbone pain
- pain in neck - left side (it would flare every single evening.)
- rib pain - left side
- nodule on top of my right foot (painless)
- baker cysts - backs of both knees


There are probably more - those are off the top of my head.
