A Bite that "Burned"

I am confused - thoughts please!

my cousin got bitten by "something" on her calf while on a hike about 3 weeks ago. Whatever it was caused a burning sensation under her skin when it happened, and she managed to kill the thing by smashing it with her water bottle. Following the bite, she developed a circular rash (not a bulls eye) which eventually spread over her entire lower leg.

Her Dr started her on Biaxin and it did nothing. She called her brother in law in NJ who treats lyme patients all of the time and he told her that it was probably a tick bite and to take doxy, and that is what has been helping make the rash go away. But I am having a hard time believing it was a tick, bc those things are darn hard to kill, and I never heard of anyone having pain when bitten by one - do you guys think this was a spider bite?? And if so, should she still follow the six week treatment after symptoms resolve rule?

and if anyone in NJ is looking for a lyme doctor, I apparently have a new doctor contact!

So it was a circle with the bite mark in the middle?

If it's just considered a bit with no EM - then it's 4 weeks of treatment.


If he's considering the rash to be an EM - then it's treat until symptom free plus 4 weeks (6 weeks minimum)

So, if no other symptoms arise...then treat 4 weeks after the resolution of the rash with a minimum of 6 weeks total.

Remember - it's possible another insect could have infected her with LD.

some spider bites give a rash and immediate burn.

then if that's the case, if she was responsive to doxy, then i will strongly advise her to treat 6 weeks beyond her resolved symptoms, which includes a rash and headaches. thanks for the info everyone!
