Maca (femmenesence) for female hormones

Hello,

My ND who has been treating me for Lyme recommended I use a supplement called Femmenesence which is essentially maca root. No less than an hour after taking my first pill and I'm experiencing cramping, spotting, and some nausea, which has passed.

Is this normal when starting a supplement like this? I have really awful hot flashes a week before my period and in general my hormones go crazy because of the lyme.

I know that sometimes adaptogens are not great for your adrenals, but I just wanted to experiment with this because I also have low testosterone.

Has anyone tried Maca? Did you have this experience? Should I stop? I tried calling my doctor but he hasn't called me back yet and I'm worried.

I did try maca - this was prior to diagnosis - when I didn't know what the H was wrong with me.

It's in my supplement graveyard. It didn't 'do' anything for me.

My question: Have you had your hormones tested? Estrogen, progesterone, cortisol... in particular?

Cortisol is fine, progesterone is good, estrogen is good the only problem I have is low testosterone

It could be lyme and friends that are messing up your system.

My period stopped when lyme hit...but it did show in my almost 0 estrogen.
I would imagine they're not coming back now - since 4 years have passed...and I'm at that 'age' now anyway.

Well yeah, I know that it is caused by lyme, everything that has happened to me is caused by it. But, I am trying to correct it through the use of this.

Hi gabybee -

I agree w/ Girlie, could be that Lyme & Co is disrupting hormone levels.

But I have pretty strong reactions to maca - revs my engine on high. I was taking too much a couple years ago but didn't know it. All of a sudden I started having a lot of weird testosterone-related sx but never made the connection, neither did a few MDs, of course.

Stopped taking it, all went back to normal. I would lower the dose quite a bit to see if you can get your intended reaction from it... If not, I'd try something else.
