MEPRON and delivery...your advice...!!! Georgia Hunter...or anyone???

The pharmacy is shipping it on Monday. It says on the bottle not to freeze. We are having a week (at least) of freezing temps.

I called the pharmacy and asked they not put it in the regular mail...but ship it via a courier service.

But, then I found out that they aren't temperature controlled....so I called the pharmacy back and the Pharmacist told me I was worrying needlessly.
That they have put on the label it can't be frozen because they haven't done the 'studies' on it..but he thinks it's perfectly fine if it freezes.

Really? It's liquid...I'm thinking it's plausible that freezing and thawing COULD change it...

The pharmacist was quite arrogant and acted like I was being hysterical...

What the heck can I do...I'm going to call them back Monday and ask to hold off the shipment until the weather warms...that is if they haven't already shipped it.

$700 a bottle... not only that - I won't necessarily know if it was frozen and then thawed...

I had this happen to me a couple months ago. My package was left at the door and they never rung the bell. Sat out in below zero weather for a few hours. I almost had a heart attack when I saw it said not to freeze. When I went to take it, I shook it, like directions said, and it was partially frozen (I couldn't hear the sloshing like I usually do.) Is it compromised? I don't know.

Reading the prescription information under "How To Store," it lists - don't freeze, protect from light, store in dry place, don't store in bathroom......I've been guilty of storing some scripts in the bathroom and been ok. So I'm hoping the negative degree weather will fair as well as the humid bathroom confused

This is what I found...

"Do not store Mepron Suspension in the refrigerator. Your body may not be able to absorb the medicine to its fullest capacity if the medicine is taken in frozen form."

Sounds like it should be ok if it had been frozen. Not sure how this could be taken in fronen form... Mepron popsicle anyone?

- If it loses it's strength, then the Babs could become resistant to it...that's my concern. cry


I can't wait to put this crap behind me....so tired of worrying about all this crap.

Thing is - the label does say not to freeze...so the Pharmacy should be following what the label says.

That second link seems reassuring. Maybe call the clinic and see what they say? You won't hear back until later in the week though.

When the Mepron is shipped to the pharmacy, it wouldn't be temperature controlled, would it? Any of our medications could have frozen and we wouldn't know.

Don't let the pharmacy make you feel bad for questioning this though. They SHOULD be following the directions on the label.

Unfortunately, you can't relate the storage of penicillin to another suspension. It's the chemical structure of each that is important. Upon freezing, crystal packing occurs with Mepron and the nathoquinone portion in the structure alters its angle to the rest of the molecule. Theoretically, this can alter function of the molecule.

With Mepron's ultra low absorption, it needs all the help it can get. A high butter fatty meal eaten 45 minutes before Mepron administration increases levels 3.9 fold.

"The concentration of atovaquone in stock solution stored at room temperature was stable during the three-week test period; differences b,:tween the measured and nominal concentrations were less than 10%. Atovaquone was stable in plasma frozen at -40°C over a period of at least six months. For the three concentrations studied (1.96, 5.66, and 16.67 /zg/ml), the daily assayed concentrations of atovaquone were within 11% of the nominal concentrations. No trends in concentrations were observed; the overall averages of the assayed concentrations were within 2% of their nominal concentrations."

from what i understand as long as you don't take it when any of it is frozen you'll be fine. and yes i understand the bit of paranoia given the cost and what you want to accomplish with it.

I not care so much about the cost - I'm concerned that if its reduced in effectiveness the Babs could develop a resistance to the Mepron.

Yesterday late afternoon there was a knock at the door - I was excited, thinking it was my Mepron.

I opened the door - and bombarded the delivery guy with questions:

How did it get here? Was it in a heated compartment....? Etc...Told him my concerns about it freezing,

He mentioned that he had picked it up in Victoria - it had arrived by plane.
(This didn't make sense that it would have arrived by plane from Vancouver)

I thanked him, closed the door.

Then I look at the pkg - it was my Artemisnin and Lactoferrin from Amazon..NOT my Mepron. cry
