I have been taking Augmentin for what the doctor thinks is Lyme (I had a tick bite over 3 years ago, no rash, no antibiotics at the time -- then followed three years of hell, complete with several useless wrong diagnoses).
I first got a prescript
ion for Augmentin for a secondary Strep infection. I felt much, much better. Then I took it three short courses, all for recurring strep. Each time I felt good while on it and then my symptoms would always come back when I stopped. I get extreme nerve headaches down one side of my face, numbness in my face, brain fog and fatigue to the point of inability to work in my field (IT) full-time (I went back to work for four months FT after my first three courses of Augmentin).
So then I saw a Lyme specialist who decided I should try the Aug. for 4 weeks to see what happens. I was feeling better for the first half of this. But during the second half of the course (which I am almost done with) I started to feel worse.
The headaches sort of came back, intermittent very loud ear ringing and extreme fatigue. At times, I feel too tired to drive 15 minutes to the grocery store.
I am now also experiencing very bad sweating at night - I never had anything like this in two years. I am burning hot. It may be screwing with my hormones. Or maybe I am improving in some backwards way -- and this is normal peri-menopuase asserting itself. Before I took the antibiotics, I was usually freezing.
I am finishing the Aug. just to see how it goes but it is making me unable to exercise. I cannot really function in a constructive manner for several days a week due to the horrible fog and tiredness. The bad symptoms are almost every other day now. This is a roller coaster ride... I used to be a daily newspaper reporter, so I was very quick. It is hard to get used to this illness.
Does anyone know if this might be a herx reaction to the Augmentin? I need to learn more about
what this entails.
