Recovering from long-term antibiotics

Hi everyone,

I was on ABX for a full year--every form that you can think of. I'm doing much better now, mostly thanks to the fact that I eventually switched to herbs.

The whole time I was on ABX my digestion and bowel movements were actually very good, even improved. However, a few months after stopping them I stopped being able to tolerate gluten, then fats, and now pretty much all food gives me an upset stomach, with burning knees, fatigue, diarrhea, brain fog.

Right now I'm treating for leaky gut with supplements and I'm on a paleo diet. I take probiotics and eat fermented foods.

Is there anything else I can be doing? Are there resources to guide me? Helpful threads? How long should I expect this to continue? Are there success stories of people regaining their digestion after longterm ABX?

You call one full year of abx long term? I've been on abx since March 2010 except for 3 month in 2015 when I weaned off then relapsed and restarted again.

Are you taking anything other than probiotics and fermented food for Candida control. Maybe a good round or two of Diflucan is needed. Also I hear Liposomal oil of oregano, and Seagate brand Olive Leaf Extract are pretty good

Is it possible that the infections (borrelia/bart...etc) have effected your gut and that's why you were fine on the antibiotics....and now that you stop....you're having symptoms again.

People can and do have stomach issues from the infections.





I've been on long-term abx...and so far my digestion is still good.

Girlie, I was thinking the same as well, but thought to hit Candida first. Olive Leaf Extract and Oil of Oregano will also hit infections.

I think collagen & bone broth are good for gut healing.

I also feel like I read something about turmeric being good for the gut too- but you might want to double check that- I just read it in passing.
Ps. I just looked it up online- I have no idea how to post links here- but u can easily find info by googling ‘turmeric/gut health.’

Also, a good quality digestive enzyme might be helpful for the actual digestion. I’m currently not taking them , but I used them for years before switching to my current diet & feeling I didn’t need them anymore.

Thanks for the excellent recommendations, everyone. I am on an anti-candida supplement, and I'm spending this month doing everything I can for leaky gut, like bone broth, collagen, glutamine, aloe, etc.

I am now at the point where I can't eat anything without enzymes. Often if I take enzymes I can am totally fine. I am a little afraid of becoming dependent on them or something. I take a broad spectrum enzyme as well as ox bile/HCL/pancreas enzymes and they help a lot.

If things don't improve soon I think I'm going to bite the bullet and go for a fecal transplant.

What are your thoughts about it being one of the infections causing your issues?

I think it is possible but unlikely. My main symptoms were pain and numbness--neuro stuff. I had symptoms for almost two years before beginning treatment. The symptoms remained the same from beginning until end and never really involved GI stuff. When I started the Buhner herbs my pain, etc. reduced by 90% and now I'm just left with new GI stuff that seemed to start shortly after stopping ABX/herbs.

So I do think it's possible, but to me the elephant in the room seems to be the flora disturbance from all the drugs. If I do not see improvement over the next few months I may have to start looking into this. But after so many herbs and antibiotics the thought of it is terrifying and I'm really very reluctant to go down that road at this point.

Also, my Igenex indicated babesia the strongest, so I treated it to hell and back with multiple drugs and then multiple herbs. I no longer have any of the symptoms except occasional myalgia when I hold my arm above my chest.

I sort of feel like the symptoms you are describing are a possible relapse especially the burning knees, brain fog and stomach pain and so on which are all infection symptoms. I second the recommendations of probiotics and some gut healing things that were mentioned above.

Even though these symptoms are ONLY from food? When I fast or eat very small meals with enzymes I do not have these issues.

It's not an easy one to figure out.

Definitely not easy. The mystery is so exhausting. I know I stopped taking my really good probiotics and switched to generics. Need to go back on Theralac but it's eating up all my money. :/
