Looking for an LLMD in North Carolina

Hey all. As many of you probably are too, or have been, tired of going to specialists and being told, "Let's do a test for this, or that.

I really need an LLMD at this point!

I live in North Carolina, in the piedmont region (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Highpoint.

There are not many llmd's in that region, but she sure knows a few names.

Teragram and I both live in NC. I live in Wake. She is up in Boone.

It's a tough state to get treatment. Traveler does have names and most of them overlap with the referrals from the Tick Borne Alliance and the Lyme Disease Association.

There are two MDs. One is very open about the fact that he's treating Lyme, probably because he doesn't accept insurance. His website says that he studied with Dr Horowitz. I yelped him and there was one really bad review where the woman said she spent thousands of dollars and never got any better. He follows a very strict protocol.
The first visit is somewhere in the neighborhood of $750. Initially, you have to fill out a pile of documents and then pay a non-refundable deposit in order to make an appointment. Then two weeks before the appointment, you have to pay the remaining cost for the first visit. You also have to setup a tour (on a Saturday) of the facility so that you know where everything is.

His website is very clear about the treatment. He spells it out in great detail. One of the things done at each visit is a special test to check on the progress you are making, basically how much better you are. it didn't sound kosher, so I researched it. Dr Andrew Weil had a post about that test in his blog. He said that there was no scientific evidence that the test was able to measure how well you are doing on treatment. He felt that you should skip that test. Most of the appointments are handled by the nurses but the site says that you will see the doctor for 15 minutes. It also states the treatments are done by the nurses. After doing researched I learned that some of the treatments are actually detoxing, which can be done at your own home.

The kicker though is that he does NOT tolerate any questions about the treatment. You exactly as he says or you leave (according to the review). Before I knew all this, I had called to make an appointment. I asked f I should have the Igenex testing done before the appointment or have him order. The nurse said "whatever you want to do". That rang alarm bells.

The other doesn't advertise that she treats Lyme and if you make an appointment you probably shouldn't mention Lyme. I know she's in Chapel Hill. Teragram saw her once but didn't go back. She didn't say why, but it is quite a long ride from Boone to Chapel Hill. Teragram didn't say anything bad about her.

There is a third doctor listed in the results from TBA, but I have not been able to find a doctor with that name in the state.

There are also 2 alternative therapy practices. I don't know if they are nutropaths, but their sites had so little information I haven't gone back to look at them.

I have a list of Chinese Medicine specialists in the area, but have as yet been unable to weed through it to see if any of them treat Lyme.

North Carolina is a though state. If you have watched Under Our Skin, you learn all about Dr Jemsek. He was brought before the medical board (probably as a result of a complaint by one of the insurance companies), they suspended his license, but said we will stay it as long as you use the standard treatment guidelines. It was enough to give BCBS and another insurer to sue him. He lost everything. The practice, his house everything. He is no in DC but I recall reading he doesn't own the practice. Seven years later the litigation is still not finished.

So, this was a warning to any doctor who was (or wanted to) treating Lyme patients that going beyond the accepted guidelines would result in losing your license.

So no doctors in NC will treat Lyme. Some may treat other ailments, but not Lyme.

I have yet to decide what/who treatment I will use. Dr Jemsek is a four train ride away (with probably a taxi to/from the train station). I am mulling over my decision while detoxing to get ready for treatment.

Thanks. I apologize that I misunderstood what you said and for any confusion that may have caused.

I have been going back and forth about how to get treatment. Dr P's site has lots of info, but he feels like a snake oil salesman. I also feel very strongly that I am a very important part of the healthcare team. I don't work well with dictators, so I completely discounted him.

So I'm make an appointment with her.

When you come down to see her, if you let me know maybe we can meet for lunch or "coffee". I really mean for a snack or something so we can talk. If you don't want to that's fine.

if you're in the Piedmont then she wouldn't be to far. I forgot to mention that there are two support groups. One in Raleigh and the other is Apex (or Fuquay). I know they were looking to start another further west, like Asheville or somewhere near there. If you'd like I can give you their contact info.

The don't give out doctor names via email, but I was told that if I attended meetings some people might share that information. My life has completely spun out of control so I haven't had a chance to attend any meetings. I do know that they are working hard on Lyme Awareness in the state.

The latest info is that 10 out 100 counties are endemic for Lyme and I think 78 have reported cases of Lyme. I'm sure of the 10 counties, but the 78 number could be wrong.

One thing I like is that the emails they send usually there are links to new information and events that are being put on for Lyme Awareness.
