Amalgam Removal

I had two amalgams replaced - one was compromised and the dentist decided to replace the one next to it at the same time. I couldn’t imagine having anymore done. I was in the chair for over 1 1/2 hours. They were medium/large size amalgams .
Mine wasn’t the SMART method - although I did have the dental dam and I also used charcoal prior to and after the procedure.

Did the dentist give you an approximate time to do all six?

Are they all 4 quads ?

I felt a bit of nerve pain for awhile when putting pressure on one of them.. so I made an effort to chew anything hard on the opposite side as I didn’t want to aggravate the nerve. (I have a fear of dental procedures and did not want a root canal)
It took several weeks before the nerve stopped hurting and now it’s fine.

I'm just wondering if you'll need all four quads of your mouth frozen? That can be a bit inconvenient.

My two took longer than they should have...she was having trouble with one of them - said the tooth was 'tipped' or something like that...

But, I think what you're having done will still be 3+ hours - having 6 done.

I'm midway through amalgam removal. I had about 12 amalgams in 7 teeth - all quads.

I had the left side done (4 teeth; 3 upper, 1 lower) done at one time. The upper teeth were replaced with composites. The lower was fitted with a temporary onlay, which will be replaced with a permanent onlay when I go back.

This all took close to 2 hours. Dentist had estimated 1.5 hrs for this side. I was not aware of any delays or complications.

I did get squirmy in the chair about halfway but calmed down after a few minutes.

When I go back next week for the 2nd half, I'm going to ask him to give me a break and sit me up for a few minutes if I get squirmy again. I'll tell him before he starts so he can read my body language. Hard to talk with all that stuff in your mouth.

I was very apprehensive about getting it done, but it all went better than I imagined.

There is still one aspect I am confused on. Hal Huggins warns that the dentist should not cross the midline when doing the removals. I still cannot comprehend what that means - if it means left and right sides should not be done at the same time or top and bottom should not be done at the same time.

Also. Huggins says the electrical charge is to be tested and the amalgams should be removed in order from highest to lowest charge within the section being worked on without crossing the midline.

My SMART biological dentist did not know about all that and does not have a RITA meter to test the charges. So, before i had the work done, I called the office of another biological dentist who has been doing this for 39 years and is a longtime very active member of IAOMT and asked about this. I was told that he did not believe there was enough science to act on that claim about the order of removal. After that, I decided to just put myself in the hands of the dentist I had seen and go through with it in 2 visits (left and right) as he suggested. No regrets yet. I go back on the 12th to get the last half.

Hal had a hundred little rules and lots of experience with them. No driving more than 4 miles after surgery-no seafood for two weeks after and more. I try to follow the ones I can but not all of them.

FYI- the one you really want to follow is no vit C before surgery-will neutralize the numbing meds. Can have Vit C IV during and after.

Ooops - i'm pretty sure I didn't stop my vitamin C prior to the procedure...

The biological dentists do the local anaesthetic (injection into the nerve) , right? Not just rubbing it on the gums?

WBF thats great advice and I have made my mind up I will have left side and right side done separately over two visits.
Not looking forward to the procedure at all, but who would !!

That’s not as much as I thought.

I’d consider it if there was a place close to me - closest is a drive plus ferry ride ($$$)= hotel x 2 nights (more $$$) plus id probably want it spread over two trips.
