Anyone have any experience or information about breastfeeding and Lyme disease? Does it for sure pass to infant? What if you take an antibiotic while breastfeeding does this stop it from passing. My doctor gave me a test kit to test my milk but how in the world am I supposed to test milk and get results back before infant born? When infant born they immediately put them on breast unless you want to bottle feed which I don’t want to do. Any experiences or info on this subject is greatly appreciated.

It does look like the breast milk does have it.

The question being - will that pass on lyme to an infant?

Are you in remission? That may be a big factor.

If you haven't already passed spirochetes to the infant via the womb, which unfortunately is likely, I think you have a good chance of passing it through breast milk. Are there any alternatives? Could you get milk from another pregnant mother perhaps?

Thank you girlie & fields. I have read so many mixed studies regarding this topic I am utterly confused. I don’t know if you would say I’m in complete remission but definitely have mild moderate symptoms that flare on rare occasion. I have the test kit to test the cord blood and placenta and even igenex said this is the most important of the 3 tests (cord blood, placenta & breast milk) Most studies have shown no indication of passing it through breast milk unless you were bitten while pregnant and have an acute infection.

That's good that you're having the cord blood, placenta and breast milk tested. That will give you some idea of what you're dealing with. There is a ground breaking test in the works that will probably be the gold standard for testing. Once this test is available, I'd highly recommend having the infants blood tested to see what you're dealing with. It's a culture test, which it irrefutable. It may need to go through the FDA before it's approved.

That is awesome news gfields! Do you know when this test is expected? I know a few people who have Lyme had children and did not pass it to them. I think it’s like a 50/50 chance from what my LLMD said. Do you believe this to be true?
