When I herxed from bartonella, it smelled really bad. And since you have cats, I've got a pretty good guess how you got bartonella.
Well, it's a good guess, for sure! But we got these cats well after we were all sick/diagnosed.
Although it's possible the cats could get us sick in the future, it seems rather unlikely as they've been indoor cats their whole life, and I was VERY careful about
de-worming/etc them when we first got them (plus kept them in a small part of the house until they were all cleared). So, it's not impossible, but I feel they are low risk compared to outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats.
Oddly enough, I had a lot of indoor/outdoor (mostly outdoor) cats when I was growing up as a kid. And yet I never tested positive for toxoplasmosis. Seems so odd to me. How could I not be positive for that?
I have no idea which infections I have, but if I had to guess, I wouldn't be surprised I had bartonella. I don't believe the smells are from infections though, as the smell will vary based on what I'm exposed to. For example, I went to a zoo a few months ago, and I couldn't walk inside an animal building as the urine smell was completely over powering. Yet, I smelled that exact smell till the next day or so (despite showering and changing). So, whatever I have going on in my sinuses, it seems to "hold on" to strong smells. It's really odd, to be honest. And it took me awhile to figure it out. At first, I thought it was something around me!===================================================================================
Cats are infected by fleas. So, if your cat ever had fleas as a kitten - from the previous house...or wherever the kitten came from...he could get it.
My cat that we got at around 10 weeks old - most likely had bartonella. He died suddenly from undiagnosed heart disease...threw a blood clot from his heart - down the spine and it lodged at the junction where it splits to the back legs. He was immediately paralyzed and in intense pain...screaming like I've never heard a cat do....horrific to experience. By the time we got him to the veterinarian...he was in shock. The Vet went to get the needle to euthanize him...and Rusty was just about
gone by the time the Vet got back to the room. His lungs were filling up with fluid...
We discussed causes of the heart disease...and his history...and he said it could very well have been from Bartonella...although he wasn't tested, so we don't know for sure.
Re: Toxoplasmosis - Indoor cats carry it too - so if you have litterboxes...that's where it would be. I have always worn gloves when working in the planters/garden and changing litter boxes.
I guess we need to wrap ourselves up in bubblewrap......to be safe.
I can't walk across my lawn without thinking about
ticks...now...
Sounds like you have a 'smell' memory... that would be neurological?
