What would cause bruising/bleeding?

Yesterday I was walking down the hallway and I felt a sharp pain in one of my toes. I look down and it’s got an ugly red and blue bruise.

I didn’t stub it - and it’s quite nasty.
I’ve never had one like this when I have stubbed my toe.

When my husband got home from work - he noticed it and said “what happened to your toe???”
He’s pretty calm usually - but he made a big deal about it... so that got me a bit worried. Lol
Then he told me to ask my Dr about it when I see her next week...


Then today I scraped my knuckle on the cheese grater (not very bad) and it started bleeding.
I quickly wrapped some paper towel around it - half an hour later it was still bleeding.
I put a band aid on it - seemed okay for awhile and then a couple hours later it started bleeding again. It was a minor scrape..

I’m wondering if these are connected?
Something wrong with my blood vessels? Is this a sign that they’re weak?

slow clotting was my first big clue to my thrombocytopenia, some say bart in bone marrow but it was bad bad after the bactrim (a folate inhibitor) and its warnings of aplastic anemia . i was worried until i knew i was also immunocomprimised and a elderly neighbor actually need transfusion for life due to a medication. what are you on rite now girlie ? btw loads of folate , wheat grass ,iv vit c and rutin seemed to help with arnica gel to heal

So I need to see what my platelets are... I’ll have to check my lab report - I think they’re part of my hematology ...

I just read Folic acid deficiency could be the cause - I saw Lyme disease listed as well.

I was on Dapsone and Daraprim - which are both folic acid antagonists - but been off them for over a couple months now. This wasn’t occurring then and I did take folic acid with it.
Wonder if it could be a delayed reaction?

I just finished 4 days of Alinia...

But I did take it before with no issues.

My latest lab work showed my platelets were fine - mid-range as usual.

That was on May 2nd.

Only change since then is taking Alinia.

This might not be relevant for you, Girlie, but I have had similar issues when on the basic Buhner Lyme protocol because some of the primary herbs thin the blood and can inhibit clotting. Gingko can thin blood, too, as well as other herbs. Just wanted to contribute this in case someone searching the archives in the future is having bruising and bleeding issues on Buhner!

I've experienced the same as what sareli mentioned. Some of the herbs cause easier bleeding, not to mention how thin my skin has gotten due to loss of subcutaneous fat. Also, I take omega-3, which can also be the cause.

Anytime something new happens, it throws and worries me. At least you know others experience what you mentioned. Soon as another symptom starts, I get concerned. Today, my ring finger had a decent sized bump on it on top, about a half-inch behind nail. I thought, "what now?" But it's gone.

I’ve had horrible bruising. Legs covered!! Was scared I had leukemia!!
My platelets were very low..like 98. This was before babesia treatment.
Ever since I started treating babs my platelets went into normal range for the first time in 5 years and the bruising stopped. Just my experience

Do you take Serrapeptase? It can cause bleeding or bruising.

Sara - I’m not on any Buhner herbs or gingko Nikon’s at the moment...so it’s not that.

runningwild - i haven’t added anything in to my protocol that is blood thinning. I see lots of stuff re: my skin - and I try to just ignore it now...what else can we do... lol

Physedgirl- in addition to bruises - did you experience easy/excessive bleeding? Or did you not have any cuts/scrapes to gauge it...

Thing is my platelets were good a few weeks ago - unless it’s a recent change. I’ve already treated Babesia so not sure why it’s happening now?
Is Alinia hitting something? But I’ve taken it before. Maybe I missed some bruises and just didn’t cut myself ... I don’t know

i did notice that my cuts did bleed a lot and it took forever to heal!

I'm the same way. I used to think my spontaneous bruising (w/o any apparent trauma) on my arms, torso, thighs and shins and feet were caused by Bab killing red blood cells. The bruising changed to blood vessel ruptures occurring very close to the skin surface and occasionally breaking the skin and bleeding out. This led me to believed that they were caused by Bart, not Babs, that lives in and destroys blood vessels.

I also have very soft and thin skin where anytime working with my hands on a lawn mower or another mechanical task, If I bang my knuckles, back of hand or forearms on anything it breaks skin a bleeds profusely. I do know that many of Buhner herbs are know to cause thinning of the blood.

Check out the Maryland lyme treatment forum. They have good pictures of bruising and lyme rashes.

Georgia Hunter, I didn't know that about Quercetin. Good to know since I take it and always blamed my bruising solely on babesia and collagen loss. Thanks.

I take xylitol and lactoferrin
But I’ve been taking those for over a year and this is new.

Check your platelets, folic acid, and while you're at it, retest for any biomarkers that you typically test abnormal for. Unfortunately, it's hard to tell what causes what when dealing with chronic conditions. It's a matter of playing detective, seeing what symptoms are tied to Lyme, vs your thyroid, liver, other organs or hormones (that are out of whack due to fighting Lyme), or adverse drug reactions, then making changes, testing and retesting. That's why they call us warriors!

My recent labs - May2 were all good except my wbc count is a little under the range - but it always is when I’m on abx.
Nothing to test.

I get another set of labs in a couple weeks again.
