Charlie - I did change to an LLMD who has changed up some items. He, too, is worried about treating with certain antibiotics and straining kidneys. That is the problem. Frustrates me to no end.
High dosages of alpha lipoic acid should help with support when being on antibiotics, there's other supplements to take as well. You have to factor that due to herbs not being strong enough to knock back the multisystemic infection, that the coinfections could damage your kidneys, liver, and even heart. Many with bartonella and babesia have high liver enzymes, I did, many think that their antibiotics are causing this, meanwhile it could be one of the coinfections. For many lyme patients babesia is the dominant infection and unless you knock that out, or at least treat with some antiparasitic drugs to bring the parasite load down, I suspect a whole host of issues could happen to your organs.
After doing csa formula/a-bab and iodine, my bartonella woke up and was causing a whole host of neurological issues and even making my heart pound out of my chest. Remind you I was on sida acuta, houttuynia, cats claw, and teasel root... They just didn't seem to be strong enough to knock bartonella back until I went on something like Bactrim and Omnicef, that's when my heart racing stopped along with an ease in neurological symptoms. Solely counting on herbs for a multisystemic infection like chronic lyme is a risky game some of you play, some of you're worried about
the antibiotics ruining your organs, mitochondria, and thyroid. I think some of you need to remember the lyme patients like Ben Petrick and Micahel J Fox that didn't get adequate treatment they needed later developed permanent autoimmune disease/disorders. As well as lyme patients that have damage to their heart and need a heart transplant. Longer you let the infection wreak havoc on your body, longer you risk developing a lot more serious problems.
But everyone has a right to weigh the risk to reward ratio themselves which path they want to go down with treatment. I agree with many that don't go the chemotherapy route at an old age with cancer, if I was in my 50s or 60s, I might go just down the herbal route with rick simpson oil. Have to factor in all of that, but really, antibiotics is nowhere deadly to the immune system or organs compared to something like chemo.

Stephen Buhner, I think some of these naturopaths and herbalists are striking the fear of God in you that antibiotics are going to damage your organs and cause a whole host of disease and disorders... Other than the fluoroquinolones, antibiotics are probably the safest drugs compared to anything else on the market.
There's many that tolerate them just fine for a number of years, even long after a decade. It's very important to take breaks, do detoxes, and sometimes just rely on herbs for a few months if not a year or longer, but that's
after you've knocked the infection back with antibiotics. It's risky when you just go solely on herbs in the beginning and thinking that's going to be enough to raise your CD 57 count, expecting these herbs to tackle multiple coinfections as well as cross the blood brain barrier effectively.
Has your LLMD even done a CD 57 count to see what state your body and immune system is in? That's the first thing a good LLMD would do, then a few months later with herbal treatment see if the CD 57 has raised... Along with a check list for your symptoms, at each doctor visit your symptoms should be going away, and definitely not multiplying and leading you to the emergency room. I wouldn't be too scared to try the more mild antibiotics and antiparasitics, try them for a few months and see what happens like flagyl, alinia, malarone, doxy or mino... Even in low dosage...
