The big difference between this and swine flu is the death rate.. if 60 million Americans catch this we would be looking at something like 2 million deaths.. that's a massive difference.

For all those of you thinking this is just media hype, I hope you're right but here in Spain things have got serious real quick.

Okay, I read further on the 2009-2010 swine flu. It says:

“Additionally, CDC estimated that 151,700-575,400 people worldwide died from (H1N1)pdm09 virus infection during the first year the virus circulated.** Globally, 80 percent of (H1N1)pdm09 virus-related deaths were estimated to have occurred in people younger than 65 years of age. This differs greatly from typical seasonal influenza epidemics, during which about 70 percent to 90 percent of deaths are estimated to occur in people 65 years and older.“

I thought that was interesting, considering our postulations regarding why older people tend to die or get hit hardest with flu in general. There must be more involved than we understand.

I am pretty isolated and don’t watch the news. In the past 5 days or so, I have been checking online news especially for my state, as I am so out of the loop.

I suspect so many people are panicked or reactive is because of fear of being forced to stay home and fear of no money, not necessarily fear of the virus itself. The reason is because they see what has happened in other countries and other states. I am not prepared for a forced lockdown. Most people can’t prepare now anyway because the grocery store shelves are bare.

We don’t know how devastating this will be to normal life and for how long. If it goes on too long, how do businesses including gas stations, grocery stores, and everything else we take for granted recover and pick up where they left off?

Schools are closed. Parents are forced to stay home or find someone else to watch their children if they are still working at a job site, if they still have a job. How do people buy food or pay bills without money if they don’t get paid? Lots to be panicked about.

I agree, WBF... and all of this is being done with the hope we that we can avoid a situation similar to the healthcare crash in Italy. We're still very much in the beginning of this current pandemic. No need to compare numbers at this stage... it will clearly be much worse than H1N1 was. I guess H1N1 was easier to contain??

The positive cases have spiked here in B.C. Canada.

My husband has a cough now -
He has diabetes and is 60.

I’m worried about my son who has asthma and works for a grocery store in another city. He will be working throughout this pandemic.

Trying to keep a handle on my worrying...but it’s getting more difficult as this spreads.

Our province’s first death was in a care home. There have been 3 or 4 more deaths in that care home since then.

This is not something to take lightly.

When I called the number about testing - my husband was denied.
Only doctors can send you for the test but they’re even reluctant because there are a shortage of test
kits.

So I’m keeping hubby at arms length and disinfecting things with rubbing alcohol often.

If you look at what happened/is happening in the countries that have been dealing with it the longest - it’s serious!
China was spraying down their streets.

Interesting that schools were closed here BUT not the daycare facilities - crazy!!

Girlie My thoughts are with you , your hubby and son!!! One thing Lyme has taught us is to stay strong!! I know it difficult right now but we have no choice....

Girlie is he taking anything? Do you have any herbs/supps lying around that might be helpful? ... J.knotweed, red sage, zinc, selenium...

The zinc/ elderberry lozenges work wonder for regular cold viruses.

Stops development or if cought later- cuts sick time in half. Zinc pills are not the same- vapors dont go up into nasal passages.
