Getting things ready to move into our mold-remediated house.

BED FRAMES

I read that metal frames cause EMF issues, so I am considering unfinished wood (non-toxic) bed frames. I saw some cheap ones on IKEA in twin size, but not sure about quality and durability or suitability for adults. One model looked like all wood slats, but the one more solidly built had plastic or rubber end caps on the slats. Any recommendations on wood frames that are affordable?

MATTRESSES

All the non-toxic mattresses are latex and wool or cotton and extremely expensive. I am not ready to spend ungodly amounts of money on a mattress and have qualms about all the materials used.

Are there other mattresses that don’t have flame retardants and could be encased in allergy proof covers that would work fine? Do coil mattresses on metal box springs even exist anymore? I always loved those and hated the memory foam mattresses. My mom’s last mattress was a memory foam - most expensive piece of crap I ever laid eyes on. Permanent dents on first use in spite of non-sense assurance from salesperson. Disgusting. Any brands/models recommended?

Looking for specifics - brands, models, materials. I have googled this stuff many times but get lost and overwhelmed with internet searching. Thank you in advance.

I do ok with loom & leaf. As you may recall, i’m very sensitive to mattresses. They also have a money back guarantee (120 day trial) - you just have to pay return shipping. The cover is organic cotton.

Avocado green is latex which I slept ok on (no numbness). Very comfortable with the topper (otherwise hard). I have a latex allergy so was nervous about it. I did get shingles a month after we got it and was nervous that it was somehow related so I returned it. It probably was not related. The company was AWESOME and I didn’t even pay return shipping. They also asked if I knew of anyone in need that we could donate it too. Overall, just fantastic company.

I don’t seem to be emf sensitive so can’t help you on the frame. Mine is metal and doesn’t bother me.

Also, I reached out to all companies about materials used. Here’s what L & L said:

Please know all of our foams are CertiPUR-US certified. As part of our strong Green Initiative we do not use any sprays or chemicals on our mattress. Our mattresses are free of formaldehyde, phthalates, ozone depleaters, PBDE's, boric acid and other retardants. Additionally, our flame retardant is made of a natural thistle barrier which primarily consists of tree bark and wood pulp woven into a fiber and bonded with polyester.

Our foams are also bio based which means that we do replace 30-40% of the polyurethane with soy and corn oil.

The IKEA wooden bed frames are very durable - the Tarva model is what I have (in three sizes!) and really like it. I prefer the plain wooden slats just because I try to avoid plastic. Plus the Tarva models are very easy to find used on Craigslist. I coated them in AFM Safecoat so that I could clean and dust them.

I avoided metal bed frames for EMF reasons but I also avoided mattresses with coils in them for that reason.

I researched mattresses a great deal recently. There are a fair amount of mattresses made with CertiPUR foams but there are also other certifications I tried to find (Greenguard). The best mattresses really are so very expensive, and nothing is perfect. All of these have no flame retardants, and good customer service and return policies.

Tuft & Needle - safe product, cheap (comparatively), good company, not hard foam but also not supportive, lightweight. Gave it away.
Brentwood Home Crystal Cove - expensive, all the possible types of materials including coils, two sides so you can choose your level of firmness, insanely heavy.
Avocado vegan with pillow top - expensive, very comfortable, really good product, good company, insanely heavy.
Purple - lots of hype but also a pretty cool product, supportive but maybe not for a heavier person, decent price, a layer of foam topped by a funky silicone-like grid material.

What size TARVA’s do you have. The twin size has decent reviews online, but the larger ones do not.

Is this the slatted base you have - https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/tarva-bed-frame-pine-luroey-s89009573/?

I noticed it’s curved instead of flat. I am wondering if I am going to feel the slats underneath me. I was thinking of getting a platform frame and just putting a camping cot mattress on top until I figure out what to do about a real mattress. Those mats are very thin, so I don’t know if that would work on those curved slats. What kind of mattresses did you put on them?

I have the Tarva frame in twin, full, and queen. All are great. (And for what it's worth, the Tarva dressers are great, too.) The Luroy slats are under two of the mattresses, and I like them because they are all wood, so can be sealed, and also replaced if one somehow were to break. I have the Lonset slats under one mattress, and that's actually sliiiightly more comfortable because it makes the mattress more springy.

The twin (Luroy slats) has a Brentwood Home Crystal Cove.
The full (Luroy slats) has a Purple.
The queen (Lonset slats) has an Avocado vegan with topper.
In the past I have used a full (Luroy slats) with a Tuft & Needle.

Since you are sensitive to smells, I will note that the Avocado mattress is the only one of the four I mentioned that had any odor. I like the smell of it and do not react poorly to it, and it's a smell from natural, non-toxic materials, but it is a smell, so I thought you'd want to know.

I have an avocado mattress and love it. I dont find any smell and I am very smell sensitive. It is also super comfortable. I dont have the topper but will probably add it at some point but it is a great mattress. not sure of your price range.
