Vitamin D Levels

How high should Vitamin D be? When first tested in 2012, mine was 25. I have supplemented ever since. For the last year or so, it’s been in the low 50’s.

I know this is normal range and regular doctors don’t want it too high. What do LLMD’s, Functional and Integrative MD’s say it should be? How high do they want it?

My LLMD wanted to see measurements consistently around 80. I recall my initial results were in the low 30s after diagnosis.

I just looked at my test results from Labcorp. Result was 53.7 ng/mL with 30-100 shown as the lab range.

Do you know if your doc is using ng/mL or nmol/L measurements?

Well, my search above led me to this incredibly enlightening paper regarding UVB (sun) radiation or lack there of and lowered Vit D in relation to influenza.

He mentions Vit D levels of 50 ng/mL as the levels obtained with normal summertime sun exposure.

When my child was little, her pediatrician said that doctors are supposed to suggest supplementation for anyone whose vitamin D levels were less than 30, but that everyone who doesn't supplement in New England in the winter has levels below 30, and clearly New Englanders aren't uniquely sickly due to rampant vitamin D deficiency. I found this interesting. I've had LLMDs shrug when my vitamin D level was 24, and I've had LLMDs flip out when it's as "low" as 37. Seems prudent to get plenty of sun exposure (on bare skin, no sunblock) and to supplement if you're unable to get that regularly.

Something else that intrigues me is the Marshall protocol. When I first suspected I had Lyme, I was wandering around on the internet reading about various treatment protocols, and the Marshall protocol was one of the first that I read about - though oddly I never see it discussed here, so perhaps it's very uncommon! It involves essentially eliminating vitamin D from your system, including food sources and all sunlight exposure, which "starves" Lyme in some way I don't quite recall at the moment. I knew someone who reached remission after a year of this protocol. Anyone tried this or know anyone who did? I'm just curious. I'm not actively considering it.

insomniaaa, checking both metabolites is quite valuable for their own reasons. For example If D1.25 is already high enough there is no practical reason in raising its precursor(D25)..
