I Need a Crown on One Tooth

Broke a tooth a couple of years ago, and at this point, it needs a crown. She mentioned a gold crown, but I’m not sure how that would effect Lyme and autoimmune.

Thanks s there a better choice?

I didn't realize people still got gold crowns! Mine is ceramic.

Glad you both wrote that. I thought so too and don’t wan a gold crown. Would look like “Home Alone,”

Didn’t think metals were good to have in teeth for Lyme or autoimmune. So porcelain is okay?

Go with ceramic, the ones that take a week or two to get installed

My full story :The dentist industry is as corrupt as chiropractors were a couple decades ago.

This was an eye-opener for me when my trust worthy, but conventional dentist of two decades suddenly retired without any notice.

Make sure a conventional Dentist is locally rooted, and preferably the owner operator of the clinic.

It’s getting more and more common for nationally owned dental franchises to somewhat camouflage their identity and appear as locally owned when they are not. When you look at the fine print and who owns them that tells the truth. It’s quite often that the names they choose for their local clinics, sound more local than what they are.

The problem with these large dental franchises, as they are out to get your money no matter what, they are very crooked. I have experience from them.

Regional ones with multiple locations are usually safe as they are owned regionally sometimes by a hospital or a healthcare provider, insurance company, etc.

So back to your question. Like others answered, my newer crowns are ceramic.

But, I have two kinds of ceramic in me:

1)The conventional ones that are sent out and you come back in two weeks to have them permanently installed. Still the best don’t let the below number to fool you.

2) the quick ceramics that are made by 3-D manufacturing machine in the dental clinic in about one hour time

The quick ceramics are not a strong and usually used as a sales tool to pressure you into getting them right now!!

I unfortunately fell for that once, and probably have one crown when I didn’t need it I will never go back to that place and the reviews online are just like what I experienced there ….to get your money and a total rip off. It was a very fast pace Dental factory environment, complete with the latest pop, music playing in the background lol. The last time I went, they suggested another two crowns, but I was suspicious, and never returned.

I’d rather go to a good old fashion dentist, who is quiet, boring and knowledgeable and not ripping you off!! And I found one of those again😊. I showed him the suggested work that the “dental factory” printed out for me, he said that was a bunch of BS.

There are many dental questions posted here before, and of course you will get the “natural path” type of dentist that some prefer as well. The ones who specialize in oral metal removal done correctly. I forgot the correct term.

Either way I contacted two of them, and they seem to be corrupt money hunters as well located in upper scale, living areas. I’m sure there are some good ones out there, but when this is infamiliar territory, how can you make a fair judgment of this?

That lead me back to finding a locally, owned conventional dentist clinic and interviewing a couple of them, as well as the receptionist who knew something about the place, and online reviews.

If any of the bad online reviews just have to do with billing mistakes, etc. well that’s preferable to having actual dental mistakes, and most likely actual honest reviews!

I agree, astroman. Had the same dentist from age 9 until I was 43 when he retired.

Dentist I go to now is local and not with a chain. She never tries to upsell me, just like my old one.

I simply don’t want a gold crown and will let her know I’d rather have porcelain.

Glad you didn’t have to experience what I went through.

Hopefully lie my long comment (and partial vent! ) will help others reading this post in search of dental care.

I’m guessing a lot of dentists in the retirement age range, chose to retire when Covid happened as mine did.

I had a ceramic one put in a few years ago - made in house.
No issues so far

You never want to different metals in your jaw. Two different metals in a saline solution creates a battery.-not good for brain fog.

One of my quick ceramics made in the clinic would not stay in. I don’t know if it requires a different cement in the normal ceramics or what the problem was.

One other thing about normal porcelain ceramics is that if you keep it for quite a while and your gums recede a little, they can add to it while it’s still in your mouth.

I don’t think they can do that with the ones that are made in an hour in the clinic as the material is slightly different.

Another piece of helpful info to this dental related post.;

I wrote a post a little over a year ago about my increase in cavities, and someone here brought to my attention The advanced oral rinse is that the now have available, which are not retail. For one year I’ve used CariFree pH, elevated anti-cavity, oral rinse, and their toothpaste. They have their own website as well as selling this on Amazon. I have not had a cavity in over a year now.

in my case, I might be more cavity prone because of my low immunoglobulin blood disorder. IGG immunoglobulins are what battle bacteria mine are under the range, so that certainly doesn’t help deter cavities.

I have gone to both biological/holistic dentists and conventional dentists, who both offer ceramic crowns, so this is a case in which there might be no particular benefit to the biological/holistic route.

That’s another item I like about my dentist. She understands the natural aspect of health and even has me taking a natural mouth wash.

I think she forgot about the Lyme and autoimmune when she suggested gold.

running wild just a heads up, if you get ceramic or porcelain crowns - there are the ones that still have metal on the inside inside with simply just a ceramic cover/layer on the outside, and then there are the full ceramic ones.

If you're going with ceramic you would want the full ceramic ones.

Yes. stronger. well, at the time they were Pretty common in the 80's - 90's.

I had one old one leak two years ago, caught in time and no need for root canal. They ground down the "stump" even more, filled it, then was re-crowned with 100% ceramic or porcelain, or both combined , Im not sure.

So I googled difference in "ceramic or porcelain crowns?"

Web says:

"You may be surprised to learn that both dental crown materials are made using dental porcelain and dental ceramics, which means that they are very similar in what they can offer you...

.....The main difference is in the way they are made, **with ceramic crowns including some porcelain and porcelain crowns including only dental porcelain**.

Thanks to all for the great, helpful information. I did not know until it was mentioned here that porcelain crowns had metal. Called my dentist's office and found out that is why she mentioned gold - because the back part was going to have some in it. She had forgotten about my health issues, so that has been changed to all porcelain. As Rainy mentioned " If you're going with ceramic you would want the full ceramic ones."

That was very helpful, as were all answers and conversation. And Girlie, the dentist said she had mentioned gold because it holds up better. I'm too old to worry about holding up for longer than the full porcelain will.
