WalkingbyFaith: I'm glad to see you posting and am happy to hear (based on our comments
in astroman's thread) that you're okay and that there was no major damage to your home. I hope your Mom is doing well.
I'm still waiting for running wild to surface, as I think he would have been in the path, too. Georgia Hunter hasn't been on for a while, but I think he might have also been in an affected area. Just like JMF84 mentioned for his area, the impact in my area was also worse than most of us were expecting.
Western NC had already been dealing with a lot of rain in the 2-3 days prior to Helene, due to a weather system that was stalled over eastern TN and western NC. The grounds were already saturated and creeks, streams, and rivers were already running high. Then, Helene arrived.
In one video, a meteorologist in St. Louis said that it's believed that Helene dumped 40 trillion gallons of water, in total. It's difficult to really comprehend how much water that is, but the meteorologist did a pretty good job using some animations to try to put it into context.
How much rain has Hurricane Helene dumped?
https://youtu.be/jjzydoooewkThere's also a geologist that's made a few videos to show what happened to the mountainsides during Helene's extreme (30+ inches) of rain and why so much water flowed into Chimney Rock, NC and also why the Nolichucky, Cane, and Toe rivers flooded so badly.

Thanks again for posting. I'm glad to know you're safe. My best to you and your Mom.
