LLMD just rx rimfampin for Bart that has been giving probs for nearly 2 years (along w/ other Lgme beastie buddies). But Bart seems to b the chief concern. Been on Bactrim, mino, doxy, azyth in last 24 months. Haven't been able to knick the Bart down. Also taking BAR3, Fluconazole, probi yada yada. My stomach & GI have been extremely unhappy. I'm just getting over 10 week bought w/ bronchitis/walk pneumonia. Rifampin has been added. The pharmacist seemed a bit surprised by the dosing instructions. I'm struggling to add another abx (been on this Lyme rodeo for over 21 yrs). Burnout is great currently. Was wondering when first prescribed what was the dosing your Dr requested? TIA

just to be aware - rifabutin and rifampicin are 2 quite different drugs in the same family (Rifamycins )

doses, half lifes, contra-indications etc are different

antibiotic dosing by almost all LLMD's follows general antibiotic dosing guidelines for each drug
they are after all medically trained and registered doctors - so do not like to stray far from what is known

Rifabutin and clarithromycin is treatment 101 for bartonella. Really no reason to use rifampin, its weaker and rifabutin penetrates 50x deeper than rifampin into the tissue where bartonella hides. It can cuse die off reaction in the eye called uveitis so beware as this needs ophthalmologic care. Rifabutin should be taken on an empty stomach 30-60 mins before the macrolide so they peak at the same time. Taking with food reduces absorption.

It's sister drug, Rifampin, was just prescribed for me last week. I've been reluctant to start since it is brand new treatment for me. I'm amazed how much PTSD I've developed over the years with taking antibiotics. At least taking ones I've taken before I kinda know what impact on my life to expect (the cure can be worse than the disease for period of time), how long I maybe even less functional due to additional or increased symps. But w/ a new one it causes anxiety because it is already been months of severe body/mind/spirit/life impairment . I find it a hard jump knowing I still have to find ways to do life, meet deadlines, deal w/ existing symps and possibly add unknown additional impairment for period of time. I have no clue how long will b on it but it's 600mg/day and there r 2 refills.
