A friend of mine called me last night to tell me a lady she worked with got a real Christmas tree and it was loaded with ticks. They were crawling all over her rug and crawling up her stairs.

I was really upset because I love having a real tree every year.

From now on it will be a fake tree. I hate ticks they took away my love for gardening now this.

I was also wondering about the pieces of wood we always have here next to the fireplace during winter time.... better to leave them all in the cold cellar or outside..?!?! Not that I really see ticks everywhere but in the meantime I have learnd that they CAN be everywhere !!

better save than sorry !!!

It happened in Freehold New Jersey. Another friend told me that they also stay in leaf piles and on piles of fire wood to stay warm.

It doesn't surprise me that the tree came from the NE. I actually used to "fly in" to Freehold, NJ for business trips,..... I often wonder if I didn't get bitten there. Many times we would walk outside to "get lunch" and all the fenced off sidewalks were overgrown with weeds, etc.

Anyway, we found an overload of ticks here in FL, when companies would come around with their giant trucks and blow fresh mulch under bushes and trees (we lived in a gated community).

I believe the ticks can live anywhere where there's a moist clustered area (like Christmas trees all stacked together on a truck) or mulch packed in a truck..... I mean, what is the mulch made out of and where did they get it?

Idiot doctors here in FL say "we don't have any ticks" - what BS.

I am so happy I saw this! I am bored at work and just reading through the old archives hoping to learn more info.

My family laughed at me this past Christmas because I refused to get a real tree. I told them there is no way to prove that there AREN'T ticks on them. They told me "it's too cold out", there won't be any on them. I live in NE Pennsylvania, aka tick central.

I bought a beautiful fake tree and loved it just the same. And I burned lots of pine candles to give me that real Christmas tree smell. And had no worries about ticks.

jelainep where in Fl? We also lived in a community where they did our lawns. I spent 10 yrs down there but nobody could ever diagnose me, they said I was depressed.
