Okay, this is not directly on-topic, but it's Friday and a beautiful day here in Eastern Maryland. My fav thing to do on a day like this - after work is to sit out in our backyard by the fire and drink a glass or two of red wine with dinner. My favs are pinot noir or a good Zinfandel. But, with the latest flare-up in Lyme with me, I have stayed away for the most part. I did have a glass of white last week and seemed to have negative effects the next day. Is wine/alcohol and definitve no-no with Lyme? If so, forever? or just until it is better managed?   sniff....

:-( Well, I am going to stay away for the time being. Once I get it managed better, I may try some to test the waters again. With episodes in the past, before I knew this to be Lyme, I just naturally stopped drinking alcohol for a while...after the episodes remitted, I picked it back up again with no ill effects. I guess the trick is not to lower the immune system too much. Thanks for your response!

Alcohol intolerance is common with tbi's. I can have a glass of wine once in a great while - or a shot of something a little harder.

I'm not even completely sure that I have lyme, just pretty sure -- but I did notice an alcohol intolerance beginning a few months ago (when I started going into the docs). I would drink about 4-5 beers at a party and feel like I'm going to die the next day, when I would rarely get hungover at all in the past.

I've limited myself to 1 beer a week, which is nothing considering I'm in my early-mid twenties. :\ Going to drink my quota today on the beach.

When you get better I'm sure you will be able to drink again...

good comments...and, SkBM, that has indeed been my experience (and I have had this since at least high school - 51 now) - get better first, then reincorporate the alcohol if you want.

Yeah, skBM, back when I was sick but without a diagnosis, one of the weirdest things was that after 2-3 beers I would have a terrible hangover, whereas before, 2-3 beers wasn't even getting warmed up. I was shocked when I first spoke to a LLMD and he asked if I had lower alcohol tolerance. This question seemed so out of the blue, but to a LLMD, it's a sign.

As to whether to have a drink or not, it all depends on what your liver can handle. For me that means I need to find a way to listen to jazz and not drink...I have no idea what I'm going to do!

Yes alcohol intolerance is a sign, although I don't know what the mechanism is behind it. Is it causing herxing? Could getting drunk every night for a month cure lyme disease? Or are lyme feeding off the sugars and it makes them more active? Does alcohol allow the immune system to see the spirochetes so you get an immune system generated die off?

Don't encourage me, hehe.

For some reason I doubt it's a good thing like that, or herxing... but you never know.

They say that Lyme makes larger holes in the blood brain barrier so my theory is that the alcohol and all that it can carry along with it gets through to the brain faster and with worse effects.

I'm sure there is a more scientific way to put it!

Getting drunk for a month for medicinal purposes? That would be an easier medicine to swallow!

I have given up on alcohol just because I feel so lousy after same, and I was not a big drinker to begin with. I stick with my O'Douls and Virgin Mary's and enjoy them just the same.

I am not a big drinker either - just love a couple of glasses of pinot noir with my salmon...the wife and I and another couple have a trip to Napa Valley planned next April...I plan to be able to partake of some vino by then (gives me something to aim for!).

I feel even a few sips of alcohol nearly instantly. It makes my muscles burn like lactic acid.

i hear pinot noir has the highest reservatrol (sp?) content. i think the buhner protocol uses an herb for its reservatrol content.

YES! I'll be back to partaking before long! LOL. Yes, the Buhner protocol uses Japanese Knotweed for its reservatrol...I have some of it - on the bottle, it claqims it has the resv content of 300 glasses of wine! LOL.
