Hi,

Have been suffering with symptoms largely consistent with Lyme disease (diffuse tendonitis, peripheral neuropathy, rashes -non bullseye) following a camping trip in the summer of 2011. I have no recollection of a tick bite, although I was in an area known to have ticks in British Columbia.

I have recently received results from some blood work that indicate the following:

-Anaplasmosis by IFA: IgG Reactive 1:512

-IGENEX Lyme IGM Negative

-IGENEX Lyme: IGG+ by Igenex standards

**23-25 kDA +
**31 IND
**41 kDA +
58 kDA +

-ANA: Nucleolar & Homogenous Pattern 1:160

All other tests have been normal including an ELISA for Lyme.

My questions are:

1. Anaplasmosis: Is this titre high? Is it possible that the presence of the + ANA is giving a false positive result for Anaplasmosis?

2. Lyme: Is it again possible that this test is showing false positive due to the presence of ANA? Should the IGENEX test results be
interpreted as likely to be indicative of Lyme given the symptoms and the negative ELISA?

3. Which result would you bet on as the cause of the problems - the ANA or an infection?

Sorry your post slipped by without anyone commenting,

Welcome to the forum!

I guess a lot of us don't feel qualified to interpret test results!

It is my understanding that false positives are not really an isssue, usually there is a problem with false negatives.

Have you been able to confer with a doctor by now? Are you seeing a Lyme Literate doctor?

Thanks for your reply. I am seeing a Lyme Literate Naturopath who has been very helpful. To my knowledge there are no LLMD's in my area in Canada.

I guess the root of the question is, are tests that are positive by IGENEX standards but negative by CDC standards to be taken seriously, and could a +ANA give a false positive result for a Lyme or Anaplasmosis test.

I know it's not a straightforward thing to answer, but throwing it out there as there are many that know more than I.

You definitely want to go with the Igenex summation. We're not too sure what the CDC is trying to do, but their standards for reporting this disease have caused for a massive problem of under-treatment of a very serious and wide-spread disease. They do state that Lyme and co-infections should be diagnosed clinically, howeve. It sounds as if your practitioner has done that, which is great.

As I understand it, the ANA tests can be quite fickle, giving different results. As Lyme and its co-infections can trigger auto-immune disease, it would make sense to address them first and then see how your health improves with treatment.

Basically, none of this testing is reliable. It is natural to want to get some clear cut answers and approach this scientifically. A better way to employ an analytical mind at this time is to research the information we do have on treatment and supporting therapies as well as setting up a system for charting your improvements. You will be taking a lot of different medications -- it is important to keep track of what works and what doesn't.

Well, this is just my opinion, perhaps others will weigh in here.

How my situation was finally revealed.

Metametrix labs has a very detail parasite stool test.

If you have tick borne infect parasite will be there.

Google metametrix stool test . Ask them for a doctor
Or ask your doctor to send for their kit.
It costs about $400 or more . Some insurance is accepted now.

This is how I found about stringylides , hookworm and diatomebia fragialis.

Also before I did my $900 Igenex test my Tick
Borne specialist gave me teasel root tincture and japaneese knotweed to take
Twice a day for 7 days before drawing blood.
