preparing for first LLMD appt

How do you now that you've got a good LLMD?

I have my first appt on Thurs with a doc in Chapel Hill. and I'm trying to sort through all my questions for her. It's probably going to cost me $500 out of pocket and they said I can pay each month, but I'm really concerned about how I will know that SHE knows how to help me, especially b/c my family is really struggling financially?

probably Lyme anxiety kicking me, but I've been to so many specialists when I was sick a few years back and they never helped me.

I'd appreciate hearing from folks about what I should ask her. AND if anyone has seen "her" I'd love to talk offline.

I knew during my first appointment that my LLMD was a good one. Granted, after a year+ (I'd been sick for most of my life so don't be discouraged by the length of my treatment) we've had some disagreements, but that's what I like about it - she lets me challenge just about everything she says and doesn't talk down to me. A lot of doctors think the doctor-patient relationship is one of authority, but it's not. It's a collaboration - you are working together with your doctor and they are providing you a service that you are paying for, but they're not your superior!

There's a post in the "new to lyme" thread about questions to ask during a first doctor visit - I'd look at that if you haven't already, maybe bring a list of questions with you (I always do!). I'm sure you'll get a sense right off the bat of how you feel about this particular doctor and her quality, but don't forget that it's okay to ask her some questions too! Doctor appointments can be sort of like interviews - it's up to you to decide if she's a good fit. Good luck! I hope you have a good experience!
