HLA B35 positive. What does that MEAN?

Hello again I have late stage LD and my psychiatrist wanted to run more tests because my depression/anxiety have been so severe compared to the average lyme patient in his and my neurologist's opinion. He tested me for HLA (human leukocyte antigen) and I tested positive for B18 and B35. He told me this is genetic and can make me more predisposed to depression and anxiety. He also said B35 has the tendency to deplete my magnesium. I am now on a supplement (Mg glycinate) and take epsom salt baths every night. Not sure if it is making much difference yet. I have already been doing the epsom salt baths for quite some time.

Has anyone ever heard of this or tested HLA positive? What does it exactly mean? He said that he was going to have to consult with one of his colleagues (an internist that is an expert on HLA) and get back to me re: what the next step is. Any knowledge on this would be much appreciated. Thanks.

From the little that I found that I could actually understand (LOL!) HLA B35 has to do with disease progression, but it can mean any of a number of diseases, one of which is autoimmune thyroiditis - (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) -which is common among Lyme patients.

Technically, it's "Human histocompatibility (HLA) surface antigen encoded by the B locus on chromosome 6."
Whatever that means! LOL! There's all kinds of technical, scientific info about this online, but not a whole lot for lay people as it's considered to be "loosely" connected to several diseases from what I could see.

I'd be interested in what your doc has to say, if you don't mind sharing that info.

I have a positive HLA test. I am not sure what HLA test you had done but if it's the same as mine, this may help you. Mine was the HLA DRB, DQB Typing test. My results came in alleles. I knew about my results from my doctor but was able to find a cool blog that helped me interpret all of the numbers from the labcorp test. This may not be what you are looking for but here are the things to consider:

Chronic Lyme sufferers often have a genotype of 15-6-51 or 16-5-51
The 'dreaded' genotypes (as referred to from Dr. Shoemaker) are: 4-3-53 or 11(12)-3-52B. These are multi-system genotypes which I've been told means that you are less effective at detoxing and getting rid of this. If you have 1 genotype then it's a struggle. If you have both then it's an even bigger struggle. I know a woman in the later boat and she has had many years of struggling but I know that you can get past this. It just means that your ride is a bit more bumpy and your doctor needs to be more aware of the challenges!

It's actually pretty cool to read through this and figure out your numbers (at least I thought it was). Here is the blog I used to help decipher the code. Look at step 4 for the document on how to convert your numbers. I am not sure if it will help but maybe it will. Good luck
